His wife , a sick and bitter woman , warned him to keep quiet , but Caderousse wanted the diamond , and so he told the priest everything . He described how Danglars had written the letter with his left hand and how Fernand had posted it . Fernand , who had become a soldier , came back and comforted her , especially after the old man died , and eighteen months after the arrest she married him . Fernand has done very well since then . He went to Spain as a clerk , made a fortune during the war there , and now he is a banker and a baron . They are both great men , while poor honest Monsieur Morrel is almost ruined . ” “ Ruined ? ” the priest asked . “ Why ? ” “ He has lost five ships in two years , and three banks have failed which owed him money . He has a wife and a daughter , and a son who is a soldier . He is an honest man , and that is why he is poor . ” “ Did he try to help Dantès ? ” “ Many times . He went to the authorities again and again . When the old man was dying , he even left his own purse on the mantelpiece for him . ” The priest was silent for a while . “ And the deputy , Monsieur de Villefort ? ” “ He left Marseilles soon afterwards . I believe he is also an important man in Paris now . ” The priest stood up . “ You have told me the truth , ” he said . “ The diamond is yours . ” He gave it to Caderousse , rode away , and never returned to that inn . VII . Sinbad the Sailor A few days later an Englishman with a calm voice visited the mayor of Marseilles and then Monsieur de Boville , the inspector of prisons . The visitor said that he worked for a bank in Rome , and he offered to buy a large debt which Morrel owed the inspector , who was afraid that he would never get his money back . In return he asked only one small favour : he wanted to see the prison papers of a certain Abbé Faria , who had died in the Château d’If . The inspector left him alone with the old books , and while he was reading , the Englishman found the papers of Edmond Dantès too . Among them was the letter that Danglars had written with his left hand . He folded it carefully and put it into his pocket . Next to it he found the request that Morrel had written for Dantès , and the notes of Villefort , which said that the young sailor was a dangerous friend of Napoleon who must be watched with the greatest care .
