Then they heard shouts from the street . “ The Pharaon ! The Pharaon is coming into the harbour ! ” They all hurried down to the harbour . It was true . A ship exactly like the old Pharaon , with the same name painted on her side and loaded with the same kind of cargo , was sailing into the port . The whole town had come out to see the miracle , and Morrel , with tears in his eyes , was embraced by his old sailors . Behind a sentry box on the harbour wall , a man with a black beard watched the happy scene . Then he went down to a small boat and was rowed out to a yacht . “ Be happy , noble heart , ” he said quietly . “ You will never know who helped you . I have rewarded the good . Now I must punish the wicked . ” The yacht spread its sails and disappeared towards the open sea . VIII . A Guest from Rome Nine years later , in the spring of 1838 , the Count of Monte Cristo arrived in Paris . Nobody knew where he came from or how he had made his fortune , which seemed to have no end . People said that he owned an island in the Mediterranean and that he had lived in the East , and that he had a beautiful young Greek woman in his house , called Haydée , who was not his wife . The Count’s first friend in Paris was a young man called Albert de Morcerf . During the Carnival in Rome a few months earlier , Albert had been captured by a famous chief of bandits , Luigi Vampa , who had demanded a large ransom . The Count , who seemed to know the bandit well , had freed him with just a few words . Albert was grateful , and he had invited his rescuer to visit him in Paris . “ I shall come to your house on the twenty - first of May , ” the Count had said in Rome , “ at half past ten in the morning . ” On that day several of Albert’s friends were waiting in his house for breakfast and laughing about the mysterious Count . There was Beauchamp , a journalist , and Lucien Debray , a young secretary at the ministry . A little later another guest joined them , a young army officer with an honest face called Maximilian Morrel . Just as the clock began to strike half past ten , the servant announced : “ His Excellency the Count of Monte Cristo . ” He was a man of about forty , very pale , elegant and calm , with dark eyes that seemed to see everything . He spoke perfect French and several other languages , and he could talk about any subject . When he heard the name of Morrel , he looked at the young officer for a long moment , and his voice became warmer . Maximilian was the son of the old shipowner of Marseilles , who had died a few years earlier . On his deathbed the old man had told his son that their secret friend , Sinbad the Sailor , must have been Edmond Dantès .
