In the morning I learned that his name was Abel Magwitch , but he was to be called Provis , and I was to say that he was my uncle from the country . I hurried to Mr Jaggers , who would hear nothing that might put him in danger as a lawyer . “ I have been told , ” I said , “ that a man named Magwitch , in New South Wales , is the person who has helped me . ” “ That is the man , ” said Mr Jaggers . “ In New South Wales . I warned him by letter that he must never return to England . Of course , he is in New South Wales now . ” I understood that he would say no more , so I bought clothes for my convict to make him look like a farmer , and I found him rooms near my own . But nothing could make him look like anything but what he was . He ate in the old way , like a hungry dog , and he looked round him in the old way , as if danger could come from any side . When Herbert came home a few days later , I told him everything . We agreed that I could not take any more money from the convict , and that we must get him out of England as soon as possible . One evening Magwitch sat with us by the fire and told us his story . He had been in and out of prison all his life . Then , at a horse race , he had met a man named Compeyson . Compeyson had been to a good school , he spoke like a gentleman , and he was a liar and a thief . Magwitch had worked for him in his crimes , with another man named Arthur , who had once helped Compeyson to cheat a rich lady . In the end Compeyson and Magwitch were caught and tried together . Compeyson looked like a gentleman , so he was given seven years in prison . Magwitch looked like a criminal , so he was given fourteen . On the prison ship he had sworn to smash Compeyson’s face , and he had done it . That was the man with the bruised face whom I had seen on the marshes . “ Is he dead ? ” I asked . “ He hopes I am , if he’s alive , you may be sure , ” said Magwitch . “ I never heard no more of him . ” When Magwitch had gone to bed , Herbert passed me a little note . On it he had written : “ Young Havisham’s name was Arthur . Compeyson is the man who said that he loved Miss Havisham . ” XI . Estella’s Choice Before we could do anything for Magwitch , I had to see Estella and Miss Havisham once more . I went down to Satis House and found them both in the room with the dressing table . Estella was knitting , and Miss Havisham was watching us both closely . “ Miss Havisham , ” I said , “ I have found out who my patron is . It is not a fortunate discovery , and it is not likely to bring me any honour or riches . I cannot tell you more , because the secret is not mine but another’s . ” “ Well ? ” she said .
