I was so unhappy that I walked all the way back to London through the night . At the gate of the Temple the night porter gave me a note in Wemmick’s writing . It said only , “ Don’t go home . ” I spent the night in a hotel , and the next morning I went to the castle at Walworth . Wemmick told me that Compeyson was alive and in London , and that he was watching my rooms . He had heard in Newgate that someone was asking questions about a returned convict . While I was away , Wemmick and Herbert had moved Magwitch to a safer place . It was a house by the river , at a place called Mill Pond Bank , where Herbert’s own Clara lived with her old father . Herbert had been engaged to Clara for a long time , though his mother did not know . “ Get him out of England as soon as you can , ” said Wemmick . “ He will be safe at Mill Pond Bank for a while . The river is the best way . Watch your chance , and when you see it , take it . ” Herbert had a good idea . We bought a boat and began to row on the river every day , up and down past Mill Pond Bank , so that the watermen would get used to seeing us there . When the right time came , we could take Magwitch on board without anybody noticing . Magwitch himself was very calm about it . He was sorry that he had made trouble for me , but he did not seem afraid for himself . “ I knew , ” he said quietly , “ that if I came back , I should be in danger . I’ve been in danger all my life , dear boy , and I’ve done very well with it . And now I’ve seen my gentleman , which is what I wanted . ” One evening I went to see Mr Wopsle , who had become an actor in London . After the play he told me something that made my blood run cold . He said that on the night of the play , he had seen a man sitting just behind me in the theatre , like a ghost . It was the convict with the bruised face , whom we had seen fighting in the ditch on the marshes on that Christmas Day long ago . It was Compeyson . XII . Fire A few days later I dined again with Mr Jaggers . While Molly was serving the dinner , she moved her hands in a certain way , and I noticed her eyes and her loose hair . All at once I knew what I had seen in Estella’s face so many times without understanding it . I was quite sure that this woman was Estella’s mother . On the way home Wemmick told me more of Molly’s story . Twenty years before , she had been tried for killing a woman out of jealousy . She was a young woman then , and the man she lived with was a wild , lawless fellow . It was said that , at the same time , she had threatened to destroy their child , a girl of three . The child had disappeared . Mr Jaggers had defended her very cleverly , and after she was free she had become his servant .
