He was tried at the next court , and the judge sentenced him to death , together with thirty - one other prisoners . But he was so badly hurt that he grew weaker every day in the prison hospital . I visited him every day . He lay quietly , looking at the white ceiling , and his face lit up when I came in . On the tenth day I saw a great change in him . “ Dear boy , ” he said , as I sat down by his bed . “ I thought you was late . But I knew you couldn’t be that . ” “ It is just the time , ” I said . “ I waited for it at the gate . ” “ You always waits at the gate , don’t you , dear boy ? ” he said . “ Thank you , dear boy , thank you . God bless you ! You’ve never deserted me , dear boy . ” I pressed his hand in silence , for I could not forget that I had once meant to desert him . “ Dear Magwitch , I must tell you now , at last , ” I said . “ You understand what I say ? ” He gently pressed my hand . “ You had a child once , whom you loved and lost . ” He pressed my hand a little more strongly . “ She lived and found powerful friends . She is living now . She is a lady and very beautiful . And I love her ! ” With a last faint effort , he raised my hand to his lips . Then he let it sink slowly back upon his breast , and his own hands lay over it . The light went out of his eyes , and his head dropped quietly on his breast . I thought of the two men who went up into the temple to pray , and I knew there were no better words that I could say beside his bed than “ O Lord , be merciful to him , a sinner ! ” XV . Eleven Years Later After Magwitch’s death I fell very ill . I owed a great deal of money , and two men came to arrest me for a debt , but I was too ill to be moved . For weeks I lay in a fever and did not know where I was . In my dreams I saw strange faces bending over me , but always one face seemed to be there , and at last I knew it . It was Joe’s . “ Is it Joe ? ” I asked weakly . And the dear old home voice answered , “ Which it is , old chap . ” “ Oh Joe , you break my heart ! Look angry at me , Joe . Strike me , Joe . Tell me of my ingratitude . Don’t be so good to me ! ” But Joe only laid his head down on the pillow beside me and put his arm round my neck , happy that I knew him . “ Which dear old Pip , old chap , ” he said , “ you and me was ever friends . ”
