“ I have only been to the churchyard , ” I said , crying and rubbing myself . “ Churchyard ! ” repeated my sister . “ If it wasn’t for me , you’d have been in the churchyard long ago , and stayed there . Who brought you up by hand ? ” “ You did , ” I said . “ And why did I do it , I should like to know ? ” she cried . “ I’d never do it again ! I know that . It’s bad enough to be a blacksmith’s wife , and him a Gargery , without being your mother . ” That night I could hardly eat my supper , because I was thinking about the man on the marshes and the young man who would tear me open . While nobody was looking , I slipped my piece of bread and butter down the leg of my trousers . Then I lay awake all night , afraid of what I was going to do in the morning . II . Christmas Day As soon as the sky began to turn grey , I got up and went down the stairs . Every board seemed to call after me , “ Stop thief ! ” In the pantry I took some bread , some cheese and about half a jar of mincemeat . I took some brandy from a stone bottle and filled the bottle up again from a jug in the kitchen cupboard . I took a meat bone with very little on it and a beautiful round pork pie , which my sister was keeping for Christmas dinner . Then I went into the forge , took a file from among Joe’s tools , and ran for the misty marshes . It was a cold , wet morning , and the mist was so thick that every gate and every bank seemed to run at me . The cattle stared at me with steaming noses , as if they knew what I had done . When I came near the old Battery , I saw a man sitting with his back to me . I thought it was my man , so I touched him on the shoulder . He jumped up , and it was not the same man , but another man in coarse grey , with an iron on his leg , and his face was badly bruised . He swore at me , struck out at me with a weak blow and ran off into the mist . “ It’s the young man ! ” I thought , and my heart shook . Soon afterwards I found the right man , who was waiting for me , hugging himself and limping up and down to keep warm . He was so cold that he seemed to have been out all night . I opened my bundle , and he ate the food like a starving dog . He put down great pieces quickly , looking round all the time , as if danger might come from any side . “ I am glad you enjoy it , ” I said politely . “ Thank you , my boy . I do . ” “ I am afraid you won’t leave any of it for him , ” I said shyly . “ Leave any for him ? Who’s him ? ” said my friend , stopping with his mouth full . “ The young man . That you spoke of . That was hid with you . ” “ Oh , ah ! ” he answered , with a sort of rough laugh . “ Him ? Yes , yes ! He don’t want any food . ”
