When the handcuffs were ready , Joe , Mr Wopsle and I went out with the soldiers , and Joe carried me on his back . “ I hope , Joe , we shan’t find them , ” I whispered to him , and Joe whispered back , “ I’d give a shilling if they had cut and run , Pip . ” We had not gone far when we heard shouting . In a ditch we found two men in grey fighting in the mud . One of them was my convict , and the other was the man with the bruised face . “ I took him ! I give him up to you ! ” my convict cried to the soldiers . “ Mind that ! He tried to escape , and I dragged him back . He’s a gentleman , if you please , this villain . Now the prison ships have got their gentleman again , through me . ” The other man was white with fear . “ He tried to murder me , ” he said in a shaking voice . When the torches were lit , my convict turned and saw me . I shook my head a little , to tell him that I had said nothing about him . He looked at me in a way I did not understand , and the look lasted only a moment . Then , as we walked towards the river , he spoke to the sergeant . “ I wish to say something about this escape , ” he said . “ It may stop some other people from being blamed . I took some food up at the village over there . It was from the blacksmith’s . A piece of bread , some brandy and a pie . ” “ Have you happened to miss a pie , blacksmith ? ” asked the sergeant . “ My wife did , at the very moment when you came in , ” said Joe . “ So , ” said my convict , turning his eyes on Joe , “ you’re the blacksmith , are you ? Then I’m sorry to say that I’ve eaten your pie . ” “ God knows you’re welcome to it , ” said Joe . “ We don’t know what you have done , but we wouldn’t have you starved to death for it , poor miserable fellow creature . Would we , Pip ? ” Something clicked in the man’s throat , and he turned his back . The boat was waiting for him . We watched as they rowed him out to the black prison ship , which lay out on the river like a wicked Noah’s ark . Then the torches were thrown into the water and went out , as if it were all over with him . I did not tell Joe the truth that night , or for a long time afterwards . I loved Joe , and I was afraid that if I told him , he would think worse of me . I was too much of a coward to do what I knew was right . III . Satis House About a year later , Uncle Pumblechook brought us important news . Miss Havisham , a very rich and very strange lady who lived in a large , dark house in the town , wanted a boy to go and play there . Everybody had heard of Miss Havisham , and nobody had seen her for years . Mr Pumblechook paid rent to her for a little shop , and somehow she had asked him to find a boy .
