IV . The Pale Young Gentleman On my next visit there were several of Miss Havisham’s relations waiting in a room downstairs . They all seemed to dislike one another , and they all looked at me with dislike . Estella took me upstairs to Miss Havisham , who was walking about her room with a stick . “ So , ” she said , “ the days have worn away , have they ? Do you know what day this is ? It is my birthday , Pip . On this day of the year , long before you were born , this heap of decay was brought here . ” She pointed with her stick across the passage , to a long room with a long table . A great heap of something stood in the middle of the table , covered with cobwebs . Spiders with spotted legs ran in and out of it , and I heard mice behind the wooden walls . “ What do you think that is ? ” she asked me . “ It is a great cake . A bride - cake . Mine ! When the ruin is complete , ” she said , “ and when they lay me dead , in my bride’s dress , on the bride’s table , the curse will be finished . And it will be finished best if it is done on this day ! ” Then she put her hand on my shoulder and made me walk her round and round the room . She told me that I must come to her every second day to do this . When I was leaving , I lost my way in the garden and met a pale young gentleman with light hair . “ Who let you in ? ” he said . “ Miss Estella . ” “ Come and fight , ” said the pale young gentleman . I had never fought anybody before , but I followed him into a corner of the garden . He took off his jacket , danced about and hit the air in a very skilful way . Then he fell over , because I had hit him on the nose . He got up and fell again and again . Each time he got up , he looked at me in a very kind and cheerful way , and said , “ That means you have won . ” He seemed so brave and so innocent that I was rather sorry for him . When I came to the gate , Estella was waiting for me . Her face was red , as if something had pleased her very much . “ Come here ! ” she said . “ You may kiss me , if you like . ” I kissed her cheek . I would have gone through a great deal to kiss it . But I felt that the kiss was given to the coarse common boy as if it were a piece of money , and that it was worth nothing .
