That night the theatre was full , and everybody had read the morning paper . People stared at the box where Philippe sat alone , looking cold and calm , and the ladies whispered behind their fans . Christine felt the unfriendly eyes of the audience , and at first she sang badly . Then she saw Carlotta , who had just come back to Paris , smiling unkindly at her from a box opposite the stage , and that saved her . She forgot her fear and sang with all her heart . In the last act , in the prison scene , she sang as she had never sung before . Raoul stood up in the middle of the house , and she lifted her arms and called on the angels to carry her up to Heaven . At that moment the whole stage went dark . They had put the money in an envelope , and they had given it to Madame Giry to put in Box Five . But the old woman had been told by the ghost to slip it secretly into Richard’s coat pocket , and soon afterwards the money was gone .
