XIV . Erik’s Promise When the Persian opened his eyes , he was lying on a bed in a small , quiet , old - fashioned room . Raoul was asleep on a sofa nearby . There was a clock on the shelf above the fireplace and a little ebony box at each end of it . The masked man was bending over the bed . “ Are you feeling better , daroga ? ” said Erik . “ You are looking at my furniture . It is all that I have left of my poor , unhappy mother . ” Christine moved about the room in silence , like a nun who had promised never to speak . She brought a cup of tea , and Erik gave it to the Persian . “ You are both saved now , ” Erik whispered . “ And soon I shall take you up to the surface of the earth , to please my wife . ” The Persian fell asleep again , and when he woke , he was in his own flat in the Rue de Rivoli . His servant Darius told him that a stranger had brought him to the door the night before , rung the bell and gone away . As soon as he was strong enough , the Persian sent a message to the Count de Chagny’s house to ask about Raoul . The answer was terrible . Nobody had seen the young man , and Count Philippe was dead . His body had been found on the bank of the lake under the Opera , on the side of the Rue Scribe . The Persian remembered the requiem which Erik had sung , and he understood what had happened . Philippe had driven along the Brussels road after the carriage he believed was carrying his brother and Christine . When he found nobody there , he had come back to the Opera . There he had learned that Raoul had disappeared , leaving his hat and an empty pistol case in Christine’s dressing room . So he had gone down into the cellars to look for his brother , and he had come to the lake where the siren was singing . The Persian went to the police and told them everything , but the judge thought that he was mad . So he sat down and wrote the whole story . He had just finished it when Darius told him that a visitor had come . The man would not give his name or show his face . It was Erik . He looked very weak and leaned against the wall as if he was afraid of falling . “ Murderer of Count Philippe ! ” cried the Persian . “ What have you done with his brother and with Christine Daaé ? ” “ Don’t talk to me about Count Philippe , ” said Erik , breathing with difficulty . “ He was dead when I came out of my house . It was an accident . He fell into the lake . I have not come here to talk about him . I have come to tell you that I am going to die . ”
