Then Erik had gone to the prison cell and set Raoul free . The two young people had kissed in front of him in the little room by the lake . Erik had made Christine promise one thing . One night , when he was dead , she must come back secretly across the lake from the Rue Scribe and bury him with the gold ring , which she would wear until then . He told her where she would find his body . Then Christine kissed him on the forehead herself , and the two young people went away together . “ Daroga , if she keeps her promise , she will come back soon , ” said Erik . The Persian asked no more questions . Nobody could doubt the words of the crying man that night . Erik put on his hat to leave . He promised that , when he felt his end near , he would send the Persian all Christine’s papers , and a few small things which had belonged to her . He asked his old friend to tell the two young people of his death and to put a short notice in the newspaper . Then Darius helped him down the stairs , and Erik got into a cab . “ To the Opera , ” he said to the driver . That was the last time that the Persian saw him . Three weeks later the newspaper L’Époque printed a notice of only three words : “ Erik is dead . ” XV . The Gold Ring All Paris talked about the case for a long time . A famous singer had vanished from the stage in the middle of an opera . A count had been found dead on the bank of a lake under the Opera , and his young brother had vanished too . The men who worked the gas lights had been drugged . People said that the two brothers had quarrelled over a woman . Nobody guessed what had really happened . Raoul and Christine never came back . They had taken a train from the station for the North . Perhaps they found a quiet place in the snows of Norway or Sweden , in her own country , where they could hide their joy from the world . Mamma Valerius left Paris at the same time . The managers , too , had a happy end to their story . A few days after that terrible night they found a large envelope on Richard’s table . On it were a few words in red ink : “ With O . G . ’ s compliments . ” Inside was all the money which the ghost had taken from them . The two managers decided to say nothing more about the matter . Each of them believed for the rest of his life that the other one had played the whole joke on him . Many years later , a writer who was studying the old story found the Persian , who was by then an old , sick man . The Persian gave him Christine’s letters and his own written story . He also told him all that he knew about Erik’s life . Erik had been born in a small town near Rouen , the son of a builder . His face was so terrible that his own parents were afraid of him . His mother gave him a mask so that she did not have to look at him . He ran away from home when he was still a boy , and for a time he was shown at fairs as “ the living dead man ” .
