Then she told them everything she knew . Nobody ever saw the ghost in his box , but everybody could hear him . He always came in the middle of the first act and knocked three times on the door of Box Five . The first time she had heard him , she was very frightened . But the voice had said kindly , “ Don’t be frightened , Madame Jules , I am the Opera ghost ! ” Her late husband’s name was Jules . It was a man’s voice , and a lovely one . It always came from the corner chair in the front row , on the right . “ And what does the ghost say to you ? ” asked Moncharmin , who was enjoying himself enormously . “ He asks me to bring him a footstool . ” Richard and Moncharmin burst out laughing . But Madame Giry did not laugh . She told them that the ghost always left her two francs on the little shelf of the box , and sometimes five or even ten . Once she had found a fan there , and when she put it back the next evening , the ghost left her a box of English sweets in its place . She also said that one of the old managers had once sat in Box Five during a performance . In the middle of the opera he had stood up and walked out like a statue , and after that nobody had tried to take the box from the ghost . When she had gone , the managers decided that the old woman was mad , and they told the secretary to find someone else for her job . Then they went down into the empty theatre to look at Box Five themselves . In the half - dark both of them saw a shape in the box , although Moncharmin saw a dead man’s head and Richard saw an old woman who looked like Madame Giry . When they ran up to the box , it was empty . It was an ordinary box , with red velvet and ordinary chairs . “ Everyone is making fools of us , ” said Richard at last . “ We are giving Faust on Saturday . We shall both watch it from Box Five ! ” IV . The Angel of Music After her great night , the young singer did not sing again for some time . She refused to sing at a party and at a concert , and she seemed afraid of a new success . Raoul wrote to her several times and asked if he could visit her , but she did not answer . At last , one morning , she sent him a short note . “ I have not forgotten the little boy who went into the sea to fetch my scarf , ” she wrote . “ Today I am going to Perros , because tomorrow is the anniversary of my poor father’s death . You knew him , and he was very fond of you . He is buried there with his violin , in the little churchyard where we used to play as children . ” Raoul took the night train to Brittany . All through the long journey he read her note again and again , and he thought about the days when they were both small .
