At these words she went as white as death . She held his arm tightly and made him repeat every word that he had heard . Then two great tears ran down her cheeks , and she ran away to her room . That evening , as Raoul sat alone on the cliff above the sea , he heard her voice behind him . “ Listen , Raoul . I have decided to tell you something serious . Do you remember the Angel of Music ? My father is in Heaven now , and I have been visited by the Angel . He comes to my dressing room and gives me lessons every day . And you have heard him too , because it was he who was speaking that night when you listened behind my door . ” Raoul laughed . “ I think somebody is playing a trick on you . ” She gave a cry of anger and ran away . That night Raoul could not sleep . At about half past eleven he heard her door open softly , and he saw her white figure go down the stairs and out into the moonlight . He climbed down a tree from his window and followed her . She walked quickly up the road to the churchyard and knelt by her father’s grave . The snow was white under the moon , and the night was so clear that Raoul could see every small cross in the ground . When the church clock struck twelve , she lifted her arms to the sky . At that moment Raoul heard music in the air . It was a violin playing The Resurrection of Lazarus , a sad old tune which her father used to play for them when they were children . But even Daddy Daaé had never played it like this . When the music stopped , she stood up and walked slowly back to the inn , and she did not see Raoul at all . The young man stayed where he was , because he was sure that the musician was hiding behind a great heap of skulls and bones which stood against the wall of the old church . Suddenly a skull rolled to his feet , then another , and then another . A dark shadow slipped along the wall and into the church . Raoul ran after it and caught the corner of its cloak in front of the altar . The shadow turned round , and in the light of the moon Raoul saw a terrible dead man’s head with two burning eyes . His courage failed him , and he remembered nothing more . The next morning he was found half frozen on the steps of the altar . V . The Chandelier Back in Paris , the managers found another letter from the ghost on their desk . It was an ultimatum with four conditions . They must give him back his box , and they must give Madame Giry her job back . Christine Daaé must sing the part of Margarita that evening , because Carlotta would be ill . And they must agree to pay his monthly allowance . “ If you refuse , ” he wrote , “ you will give Faust tonight in a house with a curse on it . ” “ I am sick of him ! ” shouted Richard , and he banged his fist on the table .
