“ She is singing tonight to bring the chandelier down ! ” They looked up at the ceiling and screamed . The huge chandelier was slipping from its hook . It fell from the roof and crashed into the middle of the seats below , while a thousand people cried out in terror and ran for the doors . Many people were hurt that night , and one was killed . The chandelier had fallen on the head of a poor woman who had come to the Opera for the first time in her life . She was the woman whom Richard had chosen to take Madame Giry’s place in Box Five . VI . The Masked Ball After that terrible night , Carlotta fell ill , and Christine disappeared . For two weeks nobody saw her at the Opera or anywhere else . Raoul wrote to her , but she did not answer , and the managers told him only that she had asked for a holiday . They looked worried and strange , and they had quietly given Madame Giry her job back . At last Raoul went to the little flat where she lived with Mamma Valerius . The old lady was ill in bed , but she was happy to see the boy she had known on the beach at Perros . “ Where is she ? ” asked Raoul . “ She is with her good genius , ” the old lady answered calmly . “ She is with the Angel of Music ! But you must not tell anybody . ” Mamma Valerius explained that the Angel had given the girl lessons in her dressing room every day for three months . She could never marry , the old lady said , because the Angel had told her that if she married , she would never hear him again . And when Raoul asked where this Angel lived , she pointed to the sky and said , “ In Heaven ! ” Raoul went home in despair . He thought now that the Angel of Music was some handsome singer who had made a fool of an innocent girl . That evening his brother told him that she had been seen in a carriage in the Bois de Boulogne , with a man whose face nobody could see . Raoul went there at night and waited in the bitter cold for a long time . When a carriage came slowly along the white road , he saw her face at the window in the light of the moon . “ Christine ! ” he cried . At once the horses rushed forward , and the carriage was soon only a black spot on the road . The next morning a letter arrived which someone had picked up in the street outside the Opera . “ Go to the masked ball at the Opera on the night after tomorrow , ” she had written . “ At midnight , wait in the little room behind the big hall . Wear a white domino and a mask , and as you love me , do not let anyone recognise you . ” On the night of the ball Raoul wore a long white cloak and a mask , and he felt very foolish . Thousands of people were dancing and laughing on the great staircase of the Opera . At midnight a person in a black domino touched his fingers as she passed , and he followed her .
