But Christine was growing more and more nervous . Sometimes she stopped suddenly in a passage , and her hand became as cold as ice . Once , when they passed an open trapdoor in the stage , Raoul looked down into the darkness . “ You have shown me the top of your kingdom , ” he said . “ But people tell strange stories about the bottom of it . Shall we go down ? ” She threw her arms round him as if she was afraid that he would fall into the hole . “ Never ! I will not let you go down there ! Everything that is under the ground belongs to him ! ” At that moment the trapdoor closed so quickly that they did not see the hand which shut it . One day she went away for two days , and on her return she sang in another opera with enormous success , because Carlotta had cancelled her contract and left the Opera . But she was still wearing the gold ring . When they met the next day , both of them were sad and silent , and at last Raoul begged her to tell him the truth . “ I will take you away from him , ” he said . “ I will hide you in some corner of the world where he can never find you . ” “ Is that possible ? ” she said , and for the first time she looked at him with hope . Then she looked round in fear . “ Higher ! ” she whispered . “ Higher still ! ” She pulled him up the stairs , past all the floors , until they were under the roof itself . Neither of them noticed the shadow which followed them , stopping when they stopped and moving when they moved , without making a sound . VIII . On the Roof On the roof of the Opera , Christine breathed freely at last . The whole of Paris lay below them in the golden light of the evening . They sat down together under the great bronze statue of Apollo , who was holding up his lyre to the red sky . “ Soon we shall go away from here , ” she said . “ But if , when the moment comes , I refuse to go with you , you must carry me away by force ! I am afraid that I shall change my mind . He is a demon , and I am afraid of going back to live with him under the ground . If I do not go back , terrible things may happen . But I cannot see those tears in his eyes again ! ” “ Tell me everything , ” said Raoul . “ How did you meet him ? ” So she told him her story , while behind them , unseen , the shadow listened . For three months she had heard a voice in her dressing room without ever seeing who sang . The voice not only sang but spoke to her and answered her questions . Mamma Valerius said that it must be the Angel whom her father had promised to send , and the voice agreed . It gave her lessons every day , and in a few weeks she hardly knew her own voice . But the voice told her to keep their secret , so outside her dressing room she sang in her ordinary way .
