She wanted Erik to hear her sing one last time , and she would not run away from the Opera before then . “ Do you love me , Christine ? ” Raoul asked . She put her arms round his neck . “ If I did not love you , I would not give you my lips . Take them , for the first time and the last . ” He kissed her . At that moment they both looked up , and they saw , high above them on Apollo’s lyre , something like a huge black bird with two burning eyes , watching them in the dark . IX . Eyes in the Dark They ran down the stairs without stopping once . On the eighth floor a strange figure in a long coat and a pointed fur cap suddenly stood in their way . “ No , not this way ! ” he said , and he pointed to another passage . “ Quick ! Go away quickly ! ” “ Who is that ? ” asked Raoul as they ran . “ It is the Persian , ” she answered . “ Nobody knows what he does here , but he is always in the Opera . ” “ If we really saw him up there on the lyre , ” said Raoul , “ I should have nailed him to it , as our farmers in Brittany nail owls to their walls . Let us go away tonight , at once ! ”
