Marius was proud , and he would not take any money from his family . His aunt sent him sixty gold coins , and he sent them back . He lived in a tiny room and studied law . For a long time he was very poor . He ate bread and cheese , wore old clothes , and learned to live with almost nothing . Then , little by little , he began to earn a small living by translating books from German and English for booksellers . He made a few friends , and he respected the poor , because he had become one of them . Some of these friends belonged to a group of students who met in the back room of a café near the university . They called their group the Friends of the ABC . They were young , poor and full of dreams . They wanted a free France , a republic , and a better life for the poor and hungry people of Paris . Their leader was Enjolras , a handsome , serious young man with a cold , pure heart , who loved nothing except freedom . With him there were Combeferre , a gentle and wise student ; Courfeyrac , cheerful and generous , who became Marius’s best friend ; and Grantaire , who believed in nothing and drank too much , but who loved Enjolras . Marius went to their meetings sometimes , but he did not share all their ideas . He loved his father’s Emperor more than their republic . XI . The Girl in the Luxembourg Garden Marius often walked in the Luxembourg Garden . In one quiet path , he noticed that an old man and a young girl sat every day on the same bench . The man was about sixty , with white hair and a sad , serious face . He always wore the same blue coat , and he looked like a retired soldier . The girl was thirteen or fourteen , thin and plain , with a black school dress that was too big for her . Marius paid them little attention . In his mind he called the old man Monsieur Leblanc , because of his white hair . Then , for six months , Marius did not go to the Luxembourg at all . When he went back one day in the summer , he saw the old man on the same bench . But the girl beside him had changed completely . She had grown into a tall and lovely young woman , with long brown hair , fine blue eyes and a sweet , serious smile . Marius passed the bench , and she looked up at him . That look went straight into his heart . From that day he came every afternoon . He wore his best coat , and he walked up and down the path a hundred times . He never spoke to her , but every day she looked at him , and every day he was a little more in love . He did not even know her name . When he found a handkerchief on the bench with the letters U . F . on it , he decided that her name must be Ursule , and he kissed the handkerchief every night . The old man began to notice this young man , who was always walking near them . One evening Marius followed them home and asked the porter questions about them . The next day the old man and the girl did not come to the Luxembourg , and a week later , when Marius went back to the house , they had moved . Nobody knew where .
