While they were shouting at each other , the old man secretly cut his ropes with a small knife hidden in his coat . Then he did something that terrified everyone . He took a red - hot iron tool from the fire and pressed it into his own arm , without a cry , and threw it out of the window . “ Do what you like with me , ” he said . “ I am not afraid of you . ” The men decided to kill him . Marius could wait no longer . He remembered a scrap of paper in his pocket . On the day she came to his room , Éponine had written on it , to show him that she could write , “ The police are here . ” He wrapped it round a piece of plaster from the wall and threw it through the hole into the room . Thénardier recognised Éponine’s writing and thought that his daughter had sent it as a warning , and the men rushed to the window . At that moment the door opened , and Javert walked in with fifteen policemen . “ Good evening , gentlemen , ” he said with a smile . The gang was arrested , and so were Thénardier and his wife . But in the confusion , nobody watched the prisoner . When Javert turned to speak to him , the old gentleman had jumped out of the window and disappeared into the night . “ Ah , ” said Javert , “ he was the best one of them all . ” XIII . He could not bear to stay there , and he did not want to be a witness against his father’s saviour , so he moved in with Courfeyrac , and every week he sent five francs to Thénardier in prison , although he had very little money himself . He thought about the girl from the Luxembourg day and night , but he had lost her again . The old gentleman was , of course , Jean Valjean . He had gone that evening to the Gorbeau house to help a poor family , and he had walked into a trap . He did not know who had saved him , and he told Cosette nothing . The burn on his arm made him ill for a month , and Cosette looked after him with great love . Yet a change had come between them , because Cosette was no longer a child . She had seen the young man in the Luxembourg Garden , and she thought about him all the time . Jean Valjean had noticed it too , and he had felt a terrible fear that one day someone would take her away from him . In the spring of 1832 , Éponine came to find Marius . Her father had escaped from prison , and she looked even thinner and paler than before . She had kept her promise . She had found the address of the girl he loved .
