Marius turned white . “ You have insulted my father , ” he said . “ Now you insult my wife . I will not ask you for anything again . Goodbye . ” And he left . The old man ran after him to the door , crying , “ Marius ! Marius ! ” , but it was too late . The next evening , after he had wandered through the streets all day , Marius went to the garden in the Rue Plumet , but the house was empty . Cosette had gone . Then , in the dark , a voice that sounded like a young boy’s called out to him . “ Monsieur Marius ! Your friends are waiting for you at the barricade in the Rue de la Chanvrerie . ” XIV . The Barricade That day , the fifth of June 1832 , Paris had risen against the government . The funeral of General Lamarque , a hero who had been loved by the poor , turned into a revolt . All over the east of the city , young men , students and workers built barricades across the streets with paving stones , carts , furniture and anything else they could find . Enjolras and his friends built their barricade in a narrow street near the market of Les Halles , in front of an old wine shop called Corinth . With them was a little street boy of about eleven called Gavroche . He had no home and no parents , or rather , he had parents who did not care about him : he was the son of the Thénardiers , although he hardly knew it . He lived in the streets and slept inside a big plaster elephant in the Place de la Bastille . He was brave , cheeky and funny , and he sang all the time . While they were building , a tall man in a grey coat joined them and offered to help . Gavroche looked at him carefully and then said a few words in Enjolras’s ear , and Enjolras walked up to the stranger . “ Who are you ? ” “ I am a government agent , ” said the man calmly . “ My name is Javert . ” He had come to spy on them . Enjolras had him tied to a post inside the wine shop and said that he would be shot before the barricade fell . As night came , the soldiers attacked , and although the young men fought bravely , there were too many soldiers , and they were already climbing over the barricade when Marius arrived . Since he had lost Cosette , he did not want to live any more , and he had come to die with his friends . He picked up a pistol from the ground and shot a soldier who was about to kill Courfeyrac . Then he took a barrel of gunpowder , ran to the top of the barricade with a burning torch and shouted that he would blow up the barricade and the soldiers with it . The soldiers ran back down the street and did not return that night .
