XV . Under the Streets of Paris Jean Valjean came into the barricade at dawn , in his uniform , and nobody asked him who he was . He fought all morning , but he did not kill anyone . When he shot , he aimed at the soldiers ’ helmets and not at the men . The young men had very few bullets left . Gavroche , who had come back , climbed over the barricade with a basket and ran along the street , taking the cartridges from the belts of the dead soldiers . Bullets were flying around him , but he laughed and sang a funny song , and for a long time it seemed that no bullet could touch him . Then a bullet hit him , and he fell ; he got up and sang one more line , and a second bullet killed him . The end was near . Enjolras asked if anyone wanted a reward for his courage . Jean Valjean said that he did . “ I ask to kill the spy myself . ” Enjolras agreed . Jean Valjean took Javert out into a little street behind the wine shop , where nobody could see them . Javert looked at him without fear . “ So it is you , ” he said . “ Take your revenge . ” Jean Valjean took a knife from his pocket . But instead of killing Javert , he cut the ropes on his hands and feet . “ You are free , ” he said . “ Go . I do not think that I shall leave this place alive . But if I do , I live at number seven , Rue de l’Homme - Armé , under the name of Fauchelevent . ” Javert stared at him . “ Be careful , ” he said slowly . “ It would be better to kill me . ” “ Go , ” said Jean Valjean . Javert walked slowly away , and as soon as he had turned the corner , Jean Valjean fired his pistol into the air and went back to the barricade . The soldiers attacked for the last time , with cannon and with hundreds of men . The young men fell one by one . Enjolras was shot against the wall of the wine shop , and Grantaire , who had been asleep with drink through the whole battle , woke up and asked to die beside him . Marius was hit and fell . As he fell , he felt a strong hand take hold of him , and then he knew no more . Jean Valjean carried the young man behind the wine shop , where there was no way out . Soldiers were all around , but then he saw an iron grating in the ground . He lifted it , climbed down with Marius on his shoulders and closed it above them . They were in the sewers of Paris . He walked for hours in the darkness , through the black , stinking water , with Marius on his back . He did not know where he was going . At one point the ground turned soft beneath him , and he began to sink into deep mud . The water came up to his waist , then to his chest , then to his chin . He held Marius above his head and went on , step by step . Just when he thought that he would drown , his foot touched a stone , and he climbed out . At last he saw daylight , but the exit to the river was closed by a locked iron gate . He laid Marius down and sat beside him in despair , until a hand touched his shoulder . It was Thénardier , who was hiding from the police in the sewers , and who did not know Jean Valjean in the dark and the dirt .
