“ I have the key , ” said Thénardier . “ Give me half of the money of the man you have killed , and I will open the gate for you . ” Jean Valjean said nothing . He gave him the thirty francs he had . While he searched Marius’s pockets , Thénardier secretly tore off a piece of Marius’s coat . Then he opened the gate , pushed Jean Valjean outside and locked it again behind him . Jean Valjean stood on the river bank and breathed the fresh air . Then he felt that someone was behind him . He turned . It was Javert . Javert had been waiting there for Thénardier . Javert did not know him at first , because he was covered with mud and blood , so Jean Valjean told him his name . “ Javert , you have me . I gave you my address . But first , help me to take this young man home . Then you can do with me whatever you want . ” Javert looked at him in silence . Then he called a carriage . They drove to the house of Monsieur Gillenormand , and they left Marius there , still unconscious . The old man came running down , saw his grandson covered with blood and thought he was dead . After that Javert took Jean Valjean to his own door in the Rue de l’Homme - Armé . “ Go up , ” said Javert . “ I will wait for you here . ” Jean Valjean went upstairs . At the window on the stairs he looked out . The street was empty . Javert had gone . Javert walked slowly towards the river , and for the first time in his life he did not know what to do . A convict had saved his life , and he had let a convict go free . All his life he had believed that the law was always right , and that a criminal was always a criminal . Now he had seen a criminal who was better than the law , and he had broken the law himself . He could not arrest Jean Valjean , and he could not let him go ; there was no place in his world for what had happened . He stood for a long time on a bridge over the Seine , looking down into the black water , and then he climbed onto the wall and let himself fall . The river closed over him without a sound . XVI . The Two Candlesticks For three months Marius lay between life and death . The old man sat by his bed day and night and was ready to agree to anything , and as soon as Marius could speak , he talked about Cosette . “ You want to marry her ? ” cried the old man . “ Then marry her ! She is a lovely girl . I have seen her . She comes to ask about you every day . ”
