He got up , took his shoes in his hand and crept across the room . The bishop’s door was not locked . He pushed it , and it opened with a long creak . He stopped and waited , but nobody moved . The moon came out from behind a cloud and lit the old man’s face . The bishop was sleeping peacefully , and on his face there was a look of trust and calm . Jean Valjean stood there for a long time with an iron bar in his hand . He did not know whether he was going to hit the old man or kiss his hand . Then he walked quickly past the bed , opened the cupboard and took out the basket of silver . He put the silver in his bag , threw the basket over the wall of the garden , and climbed after it . A moment later he was gone into the night . II . The Silver Candlesticks The next morning , at sunrise , the bishop was walking in his garden when Madame Magloire ran out of the house in great alarm . “ Monseigneur , the basket of silver ! Do you know where it is ? ” “ Yes , ” said the bishop , and he showed her the empty basket , which he had just found lying in a flower bed . “ But there is nothing in it ! Where is the silver ? That man has stolen it ! He left in the night and took our silver with him ! ” The bishop was silent for a moment , then he looked up at her gently . “ First of all , was that silver really ours ? I had kept it for too long . It belonged to the poor . And that man was poor , was he not ? ” At breakfast Madame Magloire was still complaining , and Mademoiselle Baptistine said nothing . The bishop told them cheerfully that they could eat with wooden spoons . They were just getting up from the table when there was a knock at the door . Three gendarmes came in , and between them stood Jean Valjean , with his head down and his face grey . “ Ah , there you are ! ” cried the bishop , and he went towards him with a smile . “ I am glad to see you . But I gave you the candlesticks as well , didn’t I ? They are silver too , and you can get two hundred francs for them . Why didn’t you take them with your forks and spoons ? ” Jean Valjean opened his eyes wide and stared at him with an expression that no words could describe . “ Monseigneur , ” said the officer , “ is it true , what this man told us ? We met him on the road , and he looked like a man who was running away . We stopped him and found this silver in his bag . He said that an old priest had given it to him . ” “ And you brought him back here ? That was a mistake , ” said the bishop . “ Yes , I gave it to him . ”
