The sun went down , and it grew cold . Jean Valjean stood up to leave , and then he saw the coin , half hidden under his foot . It shone in the evening light like an open eye . He looked at it for a long time , as if he could not understand how it had got there . Then he picked it up and began to run in the direction where the boy had gone . “ Little Gervais ! Little Gervais ! ” he shouted , but nobody answered . He ran along the road for a long time and called out until his voice was gone . He met a priest on a horse and gave him money for the poor , and asked him if he had seen a boy . Nobody had seen him . The plain was empty and dark . At last his legs gave way , and he fell down on a big stone . He held his head in his hands and cried , “ I am a thief ! I am a miserable man ! ” Then , for the first time in nineteen years , he wept . As he wept , he saw his own life clearly , as if a light had been lit inside him . On one side he saw the bishop , shining and calm ; on the other side he saw himself , a dark and ugly shape . Slowly the shape grew smaller , and the light grew stronger . He cried for a long time . Late that night a driver passing along the road saw a man kneeling in the street in front of the bishop’s house in Digne , in the darkness , as if he was praying . III . A Mother and Her Child In the spring of 1818 , a young woman was sitting on a bench in front of a small inn in the village of Montfermeil , not far from Paris . She was carrying a heavy bag and holding a little girl of about three , who was asleep in her arms . The woman’s name was Fantine , and she was very beautiful , with golden hair and fine white teeth , but her face was tired and sad . Fantine had grown up in a small town in the north of France . She had no family at all , and nobody had even known her father’s name . At fifteen she had gone to Paris to find work , and there she had fallen in love with a rich student called Félix Tholomyès . For him this love was a game , but for her it was everything . One day he went home to his family , and he left her a short letter that said goodbye and laughed at her . By then she had a little daughter . The child’s real name was Euphrasie , but everybody called her Cosette . Now Fantine was going back to her home town , where she hoped to find work . But who would give work to a poor woman with a child and no husband ? She knew that people would talk . In front of the inn two little girls were playing on a swing , laughing and pretty in their clean dresses . Their mother , a big red - haired woman , was watching them . Above the door there was a sign with a painting of a soldier and the words “ The Sergeant of Waterloo ” . The inn belonged to a couple called Thénardier .
