“ You have attacked a gentleman . You will go to prison for six months . ” “ Six months ! ” Fantine fell on her knees . “ Six months in prison ! What will happen to Cosette , my little girl ? I owe the innkeepers a hundred francs ! Monsieur Javert , have pity on me ! ” But Javert called the soldiers and told them to take her away . At that moment a man came forward from a dark corner of the room . Nobody had seen him come in . It was the mayor . “ One moment , please , ” he said . “ I was in the street . I saw what happened . It was the gentleman who was wrong , not this woman . Set her free . ” When Fantine heard who he was , she stood up , went straight to him and spat in his face , and then she began to laugh wildly . “ So you are the mayor ! It was you who sent me away from the factory ! You are the reason for everything ! ” The mayor wiped his face calmly . “ Inspector Javert , set this woman free . ” Javert could hardly believe his ears . A mayor , insulted in front of the police , was protecting a woman of the streets ! He refused . They argued for some time in front of Fantine , and in the end the mayor said that he was using his power as a judge of the town . Javert had to obey . He bowed and left the room with a white face . Fantine was shaking , because she had heard every word , and now she did not know what to believe . The mayor turned to her and spoke gently . “ I knew nothing of what you have told me . I did not know that you had been sent away . I will pay your debts and send for your child , or you can go to her . You will live here , or in Paris , wherever you like . I will look after you and your child . You will not have to work any more if you do not wish to . I believe that you never stopped being good in the eyes of God . ” This was too much for poor Fantine . Her legs gave way , and she fell on her knees in front of him and kissed his hand . Then she fainted . VI . A Storm in His Head Fantine was carried to the small hospital which the mayor had built , and there the nuns looked after her . She had a high fever , and the doctor shook his head when he listened to her chest . The mayor came to see her every day . Each time she asked him the same question : “ When will I see my Cosette ? ” He had already sent three hundred francs to the Thénardiers and asked them to bring the child . But the Thénardiers smelled money . They sent long bills for doctors and medicine , and they found new reasons each time not to send Cosette . The mayor paid the bills and decided that he would go to Montfermeil himself , as soon as Fantine was a little better .
