“ Javert , ” said Jean Valjean quietly , “ give me three days , just three days to go and fetch the child of this poor woman . I will pay whatever you like , and you may come with me . ” Javert laughed . “ Three days ! To fetch the child of this woman ! You must think I am very stupid . ” Fantine began to shake . “ To fetch my child ! Then she is not here ? Sister , where is Cosette ? I want my child ! Monsieur Madeleine ! Monsieur Mayor ! ” Javert stamped his foot . “ There is no Monsieur Madeleine any more , and there is no Monsieur Mayor ! There is only a thief , a convict called Jean Valjean , and I have got him ! ” Fantine sat up in bed , looked at Javert , then at Jean Valjean , and opened her mouth as if to speak , but only a strange sound came from her throat . She stretched out her arms , opened her hands , as if she was looking for a thing in the air , and then she fell back on the pillow . Her head hit the iron bed , and her eyes stayed open . She was dead . Jean Valjean pushed Javert’s hand away as easily as a child’s , picked up a heavy iron bar from the old bed beside him and looked at Javert , who stepped back towards the door . Then Jean Valjean went to the bed and spoke into the dead woman’s ear for a long time . What he said , nobody knows , and then he closed her eyes and kissed her hand . “ Now , ” he said to Javert , “ I am ready . ” That evening the whole town knew that its mayor had been a convict . By the next morning the people who had praised him most were saying that they had always thought there was a mystery about him . VIII . The Doll in the Window Jean Valjean did not stay long in the prison of Montreuil - sur - Mer . That same night he broke one of the bars of his window and escaped . He went quickly to Paris , took out of the bank more than half a million francs that he had saved there under the name of Madeleine , and hid most of it in a secret place in the woods near Montfermeil . A few days later the police caught him again . This time the court sentenced him to death , but the king changed the sentence to the galleys for life , and in July 1823 he was taken back to Toulon in chains , with a red jacket and a number instead of a name . In November of the same year , an old ship called the Orion was being repaired in the harbour at Toulon , and a group of convicts was working on board . One morning a sailor who was working high up in the ropes lost his balance and fell . As he fell , he caught a rope with one hand and hung there , high above the sea , while the rope swung from side to side . Thousands of people were watching from the harbour , but nobody dared to climb up to him . The sailor’s strength was slowly going , and in a few moments he would fall to his death .
