Rose bent over him , and her tears fell on his forehead . “ What can this mean ? ” she said . “ This poor child can never have been the pupil of robbers ! ” That evening Oliver woke up and told them his whole story , from the workhouse to the night of the robbery . They listened in silence , and Rose cried as he talked . Then the doctor went down to the kitchen and talked to Mr Giles and Brittles for a long time . When the police officers arrived from London the next day , the two men were no longer quite sure that the sick boy upstairs was the boy they had seen on the stairs in the dark . The officers went away again , and Oliver was safe . XI . Rose Maylie Oliver was ill for many weeks , but the kindness of Rose and Mrs Maylie slowly made him strong again . As soon as he could travel , he begged to see Mr Brownlow . He wanted to tell the old gentleman the truth , and to show him that he was not a thief . So one morning Dr Losberne took him to London in a carriage . When they reached the quiet street in Pentonville , Oliver’s heart was beating fast . But the house was empty , and there was a notice in the window : “ To Let ” . “ Mr Brownlow sold off his things and went to the West Indies six weeks ago , ” said the servant next door . “ The old housekeeper went with him , and a gentleman who was a friend of his too . ” Oliver turned away from the door in bitter disappointment . Now his good old friend would go to his grave believing that Oliver was a thief and a liar . When spring came , Mrs Maylie took Rose and Oliver to a little cottage in the country . Those were the happiest months of Oliver’s life . He worked in the garden and arranged fresh flowers on the breakfast table , and every day an old gentleman who lived nearby taught him to read and write better . In the evenings Rose played the piano and sang to them . Oliver had never known such peace . Then , one evening in early summer , Rose fell suddenly and seriously ill . For several days she lay in bed with a burning fever , and the doctor from the village feared that she would die . Mrs Maylie sent Oliver to the inn in the nearest town with an urgent letter for Dr Losberne . She also gave him a second letter , for her son Harry , but at the last moment she decided not to send it . As Oliver was hurrying out of the inn yard , he ran into a tall man in a long black cloak . “ Curse you ! ” cried the man , staring at the boy with his large dark eyes . “ Who would have thought it ? What are you doing here ? ” “ I am sorry , sir , ” said Oliver . “ I was in a hurry to get home . ” The man shook his fist at Oliver , and then he fell to the ground in a violent fit . People ran to help him , and Oliver hurried home . He thought that the stranger must be mad , and he soon forgot him in his worry about Rose .
