Monks opened the locket with shaking hands . It held two locks of hair , and on the inside was engraved the name “ Agnes ” . There was a space for a surname , and after it came a date , which was less than a year before Oliver’s birth . “ Is that all ? ” said Monks . “ All , ” replied Mrs Bumble . Then Monks pulled back a large iron ring in the floor and opened a trapdoor . Far below them the river was rushing past , wild and swollen with the rain . He tied the little bag to a piece of lead and dropped it into the dark water . “ There ! ” said Monks , and he closed the trapdoor . “ If the sea ever gives up its dead , as books say it will , it will keep its gold and silver to itself , and that rubbish among it . We have nothing more to say , and we can end our pleasant meeting . And remember , ” he added , looking hard at Mr Bumble , “ if you ever say a word about this to anybody , it will be the worse for you . ” A few days later Monks came to Fagin’s house in London . Nancy was sitting with Fagin when he arrived , and the old man took his visitor upstairs to talk in private . Nancy took off her shoes , crept up the dark stairs and listened at the door . When Monks came down again , he thought that he had seen a shadow move on the wall , but he did not find anybody . After he had gone , Nancy sat for a long time without moving . Her face was white , and Fagin looked at her with sharp , suspicious eyes . He did not know what she had heard , but he began to watch her carefully from that day . XIII . Nancy’s Choice Bill Sikes had been ill with a fever for weeks after the night at Chertsey , and Nancy had nursed him in his poor room . One evening , when he was getting better , she put a few drops of laudanum into his drink . Soon he fell into a deep sleep , and Nancy put on her bonnet and hurried out into the night . At about the same time the Maylies had come to London , and they were staying at a quiet family hotel near Hyde Park . It was nearly eleven o’clock when a thin young woman with a pale face came to the door and asked to see Miss Maylie . The servants looked at her shabby clothes and wanted to send her away , but she would not go , and at last they took her upstairs . When Nancy saw the lovely young lady in front of her , she almost wished that she had not come . “ It’s a hard matter to get to see you , lady , ” she said proudly . “ If I had taken offence and gone away , as many would have done , you’d have been sorry for it one day . ” “ I am very sorry if anyone has been rude to you , ” replied Rose gently . “ Do not think of that . Tell me why you wished to see me . ” Her kind voice touched Nancy , and she burst into tears .
