XV . The Eyes Fagin sat up all night in his cold room , waiting . His face was white , his eyes were red , and he was biting his long black nails . When Noah came back with his story , the old man’s anger grew and grew . Towards dawn Bill Sikes came in with a bundle under his arm . Fagin locked the door , woke Noah and made him tell his story again . But he told it in his own way , with questions that made it sound much worse . Sikes heard that Nancy had met a gentleman and a lady on London Bridge , that she had described Monks to them , and that she had told them where Fagin’s friends met . He did not hear that she had refused to give any of them up . Sikes said nothing . He rushed to the door with a terrible face . “ Bill , Bill ! ” cried Fagin , running after him . “ You won’t be too violent , Bill ? I mean , not too violent for safety . Be careful , Bill , and not too bold . ” Sikes did not answer . He ran through the empty streets to his own room , locked the door and pulled back the curtain of the bed . Nancy was lying there , half dressed . She woke up when she saw him . “ Bill , ” she said , “ why do you look at me like that ? ” “ You were watched tonight , ” he said in a low voice . “ Every word you said was heard . ” “ Then spare my life for the love of Heaven , as I spared yours , ” said Nancy , holding on to him . “ Bill , dear Bill , you cannot have the heart to kill me . I have been true to you , upon my guilty soul I have ! The gentleman and that dear lady told me tonight of a home in some foreign country , where I could end my days in peace . Let me see them again , and beg them on my knees to show the same mercy to you . Let us both leave this dreadful place and lead better lives . It is never too late to change . ” But Sikes did not listen . He struck her down with his pistol . She managed to rise to her knees , and she held up Rose Maylie’s white handkerchief in her folded hands and whispered a prayer . Then he seized a heavy club and struck her again , and she did not move any more . The bright morning sun came into the room , but Sikes did not dare to look at what he had done . He covered the body , washed his hands , burned his club in the fire and went out . Bull’s - eye followed him . All that day Sikes walked through the fields north of London , hardly knowing where he went . He could not stop , and he could not rest . Every time he stopped , he felt that someone was standing behind him . Above all , he saw Nancy’s eyes . They followed him everywhere , open and staring , and they seemed to shine in the dark . At an inn far from London a man selling cheap goods offered to remove a dark stain from his hat , and Sikes ran out in terror . In the night he saw a great fire in the distance , and he ran to it and worked like a madman beside the other men to put it out , because it helped him to forget . But when the fire was over , the eyes came back . At last he decided to return to London and hide there . He went to an old house on Jacob’s Island , a dirty , ruined part of the city by the river , where Toby Crackit and two other thieves were hiding . They had terrible news . Fagin had been arrested , and the police were searching for everyone who had worked with him . When the thieves saw Sikes , they moved away from him in horror .
