When Oliver said that it was , Fagin told him to take it out without his feeling it , as he had seen the boys do that morning . Oliver held up the bottom of the pocket with one hand , as he had seen the Dodger hold it , and drew the handkerchief lightly out of it with the other . “ Is it gone ? ” cried Fagin . “ Here it is , sir , ” said Oliver , showing it in his hand . “ You’re a clever boy , my dear , ” said the playful old gentleman , and he patted Oliver on the head . “ I never saw a sharper lad . Here’s a shilling for you . If you go on in this way , you’ll be the greatest man of the time . ” Oliver wondered what picking the old gentleman’s pocket in play had to do with his chances of becoming a great man . But he thought that Fagin was so much older than himself that he must know best , so he followed him quietly to the table . For many days after that , Oliver stayed in Fagin’s room . He picked the marks out of the handkerchiefs , of which a great number were brought home , and sometimes he took part in the game . At last he began to want fresh air very badly , and he begged the old gentleman many times to let him go out to work with his two companions . VI . Stop Thief ! At last , one morning , Fagin allowed Oliver to go out with the Dodger and Charley Bates . The three boys walked slowly through the streets , and Oliver began to wonder when they were going to start work . Suddenly , as they came out of a narrow lane near Clerkenwell Green , the Dodger stopped and put his finger to his lips . “ What’s the matter ? ” asked Oliver . “ Hush ! ” replied the Dodger . “ Do you see that old fellow at the bookstall ? ” On the other side of the square an old man was standing by a bookstall . He had grey hair and gold glasses , and he wore a bottle - green coat with a black velvet collar , white trousers and a smart cane under his arm . He had taken a book from the stall and was reading it with such interest that he did not see the street , or the boys , or anything except the page in front of him . Oliver watched in horror as the Dodger walked up close behind the old man , put a hand into his pocket and drew out a silk handkerchief . He handed it to Charley Bates , and then the two boys ran round the corner at full speed . In that moment the watches , the jewels and the strange game in Fagin’s room all became clear to Oliver . For a minute he stood still while the blood rushed to his face in terror , and then , confused and afraid , he began to run as fast as he could . At that very moment the old man put his hand into his pocket and missed his handkerchief . He turned round sharply , saw a boy running away and thought , of course , that this boy was the thief .
