“ You were reading a book from this man’s stall , ” he said . “ Have you paid for it ? ” Mr Brownlow looked at the book in his hand . “ No , I haven’t , ” he said in surprise . “ Dear me , I forgot all about it ! ” “ A nice person to accuse a poor boy ! ” said Mr Fang . “ Clear the office ! ” Mr Brownlow was very angry , but when he went out into the yard , his anger disappeared at once . Little Oliver Twist was lying on his back on the stones . His shirt was open , his face was deadly white and his whole body was shaking . “ Poor boy , poor boy ! ” said Mr Brownlow , as he bent over him . “ Call a coach , somebody , please . Directly ! ” A coach was brought , and Oliver was gently laid on one seat . The old gentleman got in and sat on the other seat . Then the coach rolled away through the streets towards Mr Brownlow’s quiet home on the north side of the city . VII . Mr Brownlow’s House For many days Oliver lay in bed with a high fever , and he knew nothing of the world around him . When at last he woke up , weak and thin , he found himself in a clean , comfortable bed in a pleasant room . A kind old lady in a neat cap was sitting by the bed and sewing . “ Where am I ? ” he asked . “ This is not the place where I went to sleep . ” “ Hush , my dear , ” said the old lady softly . “ You must be very quiet , or you will be ill again . You have been very bad , as bad as bad could be . Lie down again , there’s a dear ! ” Her name was Mrs Bedwin , and she was Mr Brownlow’s housekeeper . She nursed Oliver as if he were her own grandson , and day by day he grew stronger . The doctor came and went , and soon Oliver was able to sit in an armchair by the fire in Mrs Bedwin’s room . There was a portrait of a lady on the wall opposite him . Oliver could not take his eyes off it . “ Are you fond of pictures , dear ? ” asked Mrs Bedwin , when she saw how he was staring . “ I don’t quite know , ma’am , ” said Oliver . “ I have seen so few that I hardly know . What a beautiful , kind face that lady’s is ! Is it a likeness ? Who is it , ma’am ? ” “ Why , really , my dear , I don’t know , ” answered the old lady . “ It’s not a likeness of anybody that you or I know , I expect . It seems to catch your fancy , dear . ” “ It is so very pretty , ” replied Oliver . “ The eyes look so sad , and where I sit , they seem fixed upon me . It makes my heart beat , as if it was alive and wanted to speak to me , but couldn’t . ” “ Lord save us ! ” said Mrs Bedwin , and she turned his chair round so that he could not see the picture .
