Fagin and the boys laughed with delight . Nancy was a very good actress . At the police office she cried so sadly that the officer felt sorry for her . He told her that another boy had been charged with the crime , but that the bookseller had proved him innocent . Her poor brother had fainted , and an old gentleman had taken him away in a coach . The officer had heard the gentleman say something about Pentonville . When Nancy came back with this news , Fagin grew pale and very serious . “ We must find him , ” he said to the boys . “ Charley , do nothing but walk about until you bring home some news of him ! Nancy , my dear , I must have him found . I trust to you , my dear , to you and the Artful for everything . He has not told them anything about us yet , but if he means to talk to them , we are all in danger . ” VIII . Taken Back When Oliver came downstairs again , the picture of the lady had gone from the wall . Mrs Bedwin told him that Mr Brownlow had taken it away because it seemed to worry him . Oliver was sorry , but those were happy days . Everyone in the house was gentle and kind , and after the noise and dirt of Fagin’s room , it seemed like heaven to him . Mr Brownlow bought him a new suit of clothes , and one day he said that he would like to hear Oliver’s whole story very soon . That afternoon Mr Brownlow had a visitor . His friend Mr Grimwig was a fat old gentleman who walked with a stick , and he liked to argue about everything . As soon as he heard about Oliver , he decided that the boy was a liar and a thief . “ He is deceiving you , my good friend , ” he said . “ If he is not , I’ll eat my head . ” Just then some books arrived from the bookseller , and there were other books to send back and some money to pay . Mr Grimwig suggested with a smile that Oliver should take them , and Mr Brownlow , who wanted to show his friend that he was wrong , agreed . He gave Oliver the books and a five - pound note , and told him to bring back ten shillings change . “ I won’t be ten minutes , sir , ” said Oliver eagerly , and he set off . “ You really expect him to come back , do you ? ” asked Mr Grimwig . “ The boy has a new suit of clothes on his back , a set of valuable books under his arm and a five - pound note in his pocket . He’ll join his old friends the thieves and laugh at you . If ever that boy returns to this house , sir , I’ll eat my head . ” The two old gentlemen sat in silence with the watch on the table between them . It grew dark , and the street lamps were lit , but Oliver did not come back . Oliver was walking quickly along a street near Clerkenwell , thinking how happy and contented he felt . Suddenly a young woman screamed very loudly , “ Oh , my dear brother ! ” and threw her arms tightly round his neck . It was Nancy .
