So that afternoon I walked up to Wuthering Heights . I hardly knew the place , because everything was dirty and neglected . Isabella was sitting in the house in an old dress , looking pale and tired , and she had stopped caring how she looked . Heathcliff , on the other hand , was dressed like a gentleman , and he looked better than I had ever seen him . He asked me at once about Mrs Linton . I told him that she was getting better , but that she would never be the same again . Then he told me that I must arrange for him to see her . “ I am going to see her , ” he said . “ If I cannot see her , I will stay near the Grange until I do . If her husband or the servants try to stop me , I will shoot them . Don’t you understand , Nelly ? He loves her for her beauty and her kind words . I love her with my whole soul . If he loved her with all the power of his weak little body , he could not love her as much in eighty years as I do in a day . ” “ Catherine and Edgar are as fond of each other as two people can be , ” cried Isabella suddenly . “ Nobody has the right to talk about my brother like that ! ” Heathcliff turned to her with an ugly look and told her to go upstairs . When she had gone , he told me what he thought of her . He said that she had married him because she had imagined a hero who did not exist . Now that she had learned the truth , he despised her even more than before . I was angry and frightened , and I refused to help him . I told him that if he went to the Grange , it might kill my mistress . But he would not listen , and in the end I had to promise to carry a letter from him to her . Then he let me go home . I went with a heavy heart , and I have never in my life felt so wicked as I felt that night . X . The Last Meeting I kept the letter for four days , because I could not decide what to do with it . On Sunday , when the family had gone to church , I went up to my mistress and put it into her hand . She was sitting by the open window in a white dress , with a light shawl over her shoulders . Her long illness had changed her face , and there was a strange , faraway look in her eyes , as if she were always gazing at something beyond this world . She looked at the letter for a long time without reading it , and before I could explain , she heard a step on the stairs . Heathcliff did not wait for an invitation , but walked straight into the room , and in a moment she was in his arms .
