XI . Two Children The day after the funeral the weather changed , and the snow came back . That evening Isabella arrived at the Grange , breathless and laughing wildly . She had walked all the way from the Heights through the snow in a thin dress . There was a deep cut under her ear , and she was wearing her wedding ring on her finger . “ I have escaped ! ” she said , as she sat by the fire to get warm . “ Heathcliff threw a knife at me , and it struck me here . I shall never go back . I will not stay here either , because he would come for me . I am going far away , where he can never find me . ” She told me what had happened at the Heights the night before . Mr Hindley had locked the door against Heathcliff , and he had waited behind it with his pistol and knife . When Heathcliff broke the window to get in , Hindley tried to shoot him , but Heathcliff pulled the weapon from his hand . The knife cut Hindley’s own wrist , and then Heathcliff beat him and kicked him as he lay on the floor . In the morning Isabella had laughed at Heathcliff for his grief , and that was when he threw the knife at her . Then she pulled off her wedding ring , struck it with the poker and threw it into the fire . She kissed me and left that same night . She went to live near London , and there , a few months later , she had a son . She called him Linton . She never came back to the north . Six months after his sister , Mr Hindley died . He was only twenty - seven , and he had drunk himself to death . When the lawyer came , we discovered the truth . Hindley had borrowed so much money from Heathcliff that every field and every stone of Wuthering Heights now belonged to his old enemy . Hareton , who should have been the richest gentleman in the district , was left with nothing . He was to live as a servant in his father’s house . I went up to the Heights on the day of the funeral and asked if I could take the boy to the Grange . Heathcliff only laughed , put his hand on the child’s head and looked at him with a terrible smile . “ Now , my bonny lad , you are mine ! ” he said . “ And we’ll see if one tree won’t grow as crooked as another , with the same wind to twist it ! ” So Hareton grew up at the Heights , and Heathcliff brought him up exactly as Hindley had brought him up . He never had a lesson , and he never learned to read or write . He worked on the farm with the men . The strange thing is that he grew fond of Heathcliff and did not know how he had been wronged .
