XII . Linton A few days later Mr Edgar came home with sad news , because his sister was dead . He brought her son Linton back with him to the Grange , and he hoped to bring him up together with Cathy . Linton was a pale , delicate , girlish boy , about six months younger than his cousin , and he looked very much like his uncle . But he was sickly and peevish , and he cried for the smallest reason . Cathy was delighted to have a cousin , and she tried hard to make him happy . But he stayed with us for one night only . Late that same evening old Joseph came to the door and asked for the master . “ Mr Heathcliff has sent me for his lad , ” he said . “ And I must not go back without him . ” Mr Edgar knew that Heathcliff had the right to take his son , and it was useless to refuse . He told Joseph that the boy was asleep , but he promised to send him up to the Heights in the morning . So early the next day I woke poor Linton and took him up there on a horse . Heathcliff came out to meet us , and he looked at his son with great disgust . “ God ! What a beauty ! ” he said scornfully . “ What a lovely , charming thing ! Have they fed him on snails and sour milk , Nelly ? Oh , damn my soul ! But this is worse than I expected . ” Linton began to cry and held on to me , but I had to leave him there . Heathcliff told me that he would look after the boy well , because Linton was very useful to him . “ My son is the future owner of your place , ” he said , “ and I should not wish him to die till I was certain of being his heir . Besides , he is mine , and I want the triumph of seeing my descendant the lord of their land . My child will hire their children to farm their fathers ’ land for wages . That is the only thing that makes me endure the whelp . ” For three years we heard very little about Linton . Then , on Cathy’s sixteenth birthday , she and I went out walking on the moor to look for birds ’ nests . She ran on ahead of me , further and further , until we met Heathcliff and Hareton on the path . Heathcliff spoke to Cathy very politely and invited her to come to his house for a rest . I tried to stop her , but she wanted to go . When we arrived at the Heights , she found her cousin Linton there . He had grown so tall that at first she did not know him , but he was still very pale and weak . He had become a spoiled , selfish young man , and he did not have much to say . Cathy was happy to see him again all the same , and she asked him why he had never come to visit her . While the young people were talking , Heathcliff told me his plan quite openly .
