She went because she pitied him , and because she believed that her kindness could make him better . Once Hareton stopped her at the door , pointed to the old letters and read them aloud very proudly : “ Hareton Earnshaw . ” When she asked him to read the numbers too , he had to admit that he could not tell them yet , and she laughed at him . Hareton was so hurt that he was rough to Linton afterwards , and she blamed him for it . I told her father . Mr Edgar forbade the visits at once . But he wrote to Linton and said that the young people could meet sometimes on the moor near the Grange . He did not know how ill his nephew was . He did not know , either , that his own health was failing fast . XIII . The Trap In August Cathy and I rode out to meet Linton on the moor , as her father had allowed . We found him lying on the grass , and he looked even worse than before . He was so weak that he could hardly speak , and he kept looking round him in fear , as if he expected someone to come . He begged Cathy to say that he was well , and to come again the next week , because his father would be angry with him otherwise . The following week we went again . This time Linton was even more frightened , and he held her hand and cried . Suddenly Heathcliff appeared on the path behind us . Linton fell to the ground , shaking with terror , and Heathcliff told Cathy to help him home . She could not leave her cousin like that , so we both walked with him to Wuthering Heights . As soon as we were inside , Heathcliff locked the door and put the key in his pocket . Cathy was very brave . She ran at him and tried to take the key from his hand . He held her with one hand , and with the other he struck her hard on the side of the head , again and again . I flew at him , but he pushed me away . “ I know how to punish children , ” he said . “ You shall have a father again tomorrow , Miss Cathy . All the father you will have in a few days . You are going to marry Linton in the morning , and you will stay here until it is done . ” Cathy begged him to let her go home , because her father would be ill with worry . She promised to marry Linton gladly , if only she could see her father first . But Heathcliff only laughed , and he was pleased to think of her father’s pain . That night he locked Cathy and Linton in one room and me in another . I was kept prisoner for five nights and four days , and I saw nobody but Hareton , who brought me my food . On the fifth day Zillah unlocked my door and told me that I was free to go . Cathy was still at the Heights . She had been married to Linton , Zillah said , and her father was dying .
