“ When I look for his father in his face , ” he said quietly to himself , “ I find her every day more ! How is he so like her ? I can hardly bear to see him . ” Then he came in , and I told him about my plans . He seemed thinner and much more anxious than before . I dined with him and Hareton , and it was a cheerless meal . As I rode away , I thought how dreary life was in that house . What a romantic story it would have been if the young widow and I had fallen in love , as her good old nurse wished , and gone off together to the town ! But the thought soon passed , and I went home to pack my bags for London . XV . The Quiet Earth In September 1802 I was staying with a friend in the north , and one day I found myself only a few miles from Gimmerton . I decided to spend the night at Thrushcross Grange , since I was still paying the rent for it . But Mrs Dean was not there . A servant told me that she had gone to live at Wuthering Heights , so I walked up the hill in the evening light . This time the gate was open , and there was a smell of flowers in the garden . Through the window I heard voices . A young woman was teaching a young man to read , and I saw Cathy and Hareton sitting close together over a book . His face shone with pleasure . Whenever his eyes left the page , she gave him a little slap on the cheek , and when he finished his task , he asked for a kiss . “ Contrary ! ” she was saying . “ Now read it again , and say it right this time , or I shall pull your hair ! ” I did not want to disturb them , so I went round to the kitchen door , where I found Mrs Dean sewing and singing a song , while old Joseph grumbled about her bad habits . “ Mr Heathcliff is dead , sir , ” she told me . “ He died three months ago . Sit down , and I will tell you everything . ” And this is what she told me . Soon after you left , Zillah went away , and Heathcliff sent for me to be his housekeeper . I was glad to be near Cathy again , though at first she was very unhappy . She quarrelled with Hareton all the time and laughed at him for his ignorance . Then in March Hareton’s gun burst while he was out on the hills , and a splinter cut his arm . He had to rest by the kitchen fire for some days , and Cathy was there with him . At first she teased him , but he would not answer . At last she came to him and said , “ I want us to be friends , Hareton . I am sorry that I laughed at you . Will you forgive me ? ” She wrapped one of her books in white paper and tied it with ribbon . She told me to give it to him , saying that if he took it , she would come and teach him to read it . He took it , and from that day they became the best of friends . Since then they have been happy together , and she has taught him every day .
