III . The Child from Liverpool Before I came to live here , I was almost always at Wuthering Heights . My mother had looked after Mr Hindley Earnshaw when he was a baby , and I grew up with the children of the house . I ran errands and did any small job that people gave me . One fine summer morning , at the beginning of the harvest , old Mr Earnshaw came downstairs dressed for a journey . He told Joseph what to do while he was away . Then he turned to his two children , Hindley and Catherine , and asked them what they would like from Liverpool . He was going to walk there and back , sixty miles each way . Hindley , who was fourteen , asked for a fiddle . Catherine was not yet six , but she could already ride any horse in the stable , and she asked for a whip . The master kissed them goodbye and set off . He was away for three days . On the third night we waited and waited , and the children were sent to bed at last . It was nearly midnight when the door opened and the master came in . He threw himself into a chair , laughing and complaining that he was half dead . “ Look here , wife ! ” he said , opening his big coat . “ I was never so tired in my life . But you must take this as a gift from God , although it is as dark as if it came from the devil . ” Inside the coat was a dirty , ragged child with black hair . It was old enough to walk and talk , but it only repeated some words that none of us could understand . Mrs Earnshaw was ready to throw it out of the house . She asked her husband how he could bring a gipsy child home when he already had his own children to feed . He explained that he had found the boy alone and starving in the streets of Liverpool . Nobody knew who his parents were , so he had decided to take him home . The children came down in their nightclothes . Hindley found that his fiddle had been crushed to pieces in the coat , and he cried loudly . Catherine learned that her father had lost her whip while he was looking after the stranger . She showed her anger by spitting at the child . Her father hit her for it , to teach her better manners . They named the boy Heathcliff . It was the name of a son who had died when he was small . It served him from then on as both a first name and a surname . Catherine soon became very fond of him . Hindley , however , hated him from the first day , and to tell the truth , so did I . We were cruel to him whenever we could . He never cried or complained , but took our blows and pinches in silence , as if he had hurt himself by accident .
