Young Mr Earnshaw was now the master of the house , and he had changed very much in three years . He had grown thinner and paler , and he was harder than ever . His first act was to send the servants out of the family rooms and into the kitchen . Then he turned against Heathcliff . He said that the boy must not have lessons any more . He must work outside on the farm like any other servant . Heathcliff bore it well at first , because Catherine taught him what she learned . They both promised to grow up as wild as savages . Very often the two children ran off to the moors in the morning and stayed there all day . They did not care how much they were punished afterwards . Hindley might beat Heathcliff until his arm ached , and Joseph might give Catherine long lessons from the Bible . The moment they were together again , they forgot everything . IV . The Lighted Window One Sunday evening in November the two children were sent out of the sitting room for making a noise . When I went to call them for supper , I could not find them anywhere . Hindley was furious and told us to lock the doors , so that nobody could let them in that night . I was too anxious to sleep , so I opened my window and listened . After a long time I heard steps on the road and saw a light coming , and it was Heathcliff , alone . “ Where is Miss Cathy ? ” I cried . “ I hope nothing bad has happened to her . ” “ She is at Thrushcross Grange , ” he said , “ and I would be there too , but they had no manners to ask me to stay . ” I let him in quietly , and while he changed his wet clothes , he told me the whole story . “ Cathy and I ran away from the house to have a ramble , ” he said . “ When we saw the lights of the Grange , we thought we would go down and see how the Lintons spent their Sunday evenings . We climbed through a hole in the fence and crept up to the drawing room window . The curtains were only half closed , so we stood on a flower pot and looked in . Oh , Nelly , it was beautiful ! There was a red carpet and a ceiling bordered with gold . A great glass lamp was hanging from the centre , shining with little soft lights . Edgar and his sister had the whole room to themselves , and we would have thought ourselves in heaven . But what do you think your good children were doing ? Isabella was lying at the far end of the room , screaming . Edgar stood by the fire , crying quietly . In the middle of the table sat a little dog , shaking its paw and yelling . They had nearly pulled it in two between them , because they were quarrelling about which of them should hold it . We laughed at the silly things ! When would you catch me wishing for something that Cathy wanted ? I would not change places with Edgar Linton for a thousand lives . ”
