“ You need not have touched me , ” he answered . “ I shall be as dirty as I please . I like to be dirty , and I will be dirty . ” And he ran out of the room . The next day was Christmas Day , and the Linton children were coming to dinner . Early in the morning Heathcliff came into the kitchen and asked me to make him look decent . I washed him , combed his hair and found him clean clothes . I told him that he was handsome enough , if he would only learn to smile and to trust people . For a while he looked almost happy . But when the Lintons arrived , Hindley met him at the door and told him to get out of the way . Edgar looked at him and laughed at his long hair . In a sudden rage Heathcliff picked up a dish of hot apple sauce and threw it straight into Edgar’s face . Edgar began to cry , and his sister cried with him . Hindley dragged Heathcliff upstairs , beat him and locked him in a cold room at the top of the house without his dinner . Catherine hardly ate anything that day . Later , when the Lintons had gone , I went up with some food for Heathcliff and found him sitting on the floor with his head in his hands . “ I am trying to decide how I shall pay Hindley back , ” he said . “ I do not care how long I wait , if I can only do it at last . I hope he will not die before I do . ” V . Edgar Linton In the summer of 1778 , nearly twenty - three years ago , Hindley’s wife gave birth to a son . They called him Hareton , after the man whose name is carved over the door . The doctor told me privately that the mother had been sick for months with a disease of the lungs , and that she would not live through the winter . In fact she died in the autumn . She was sitting in her husband’s arms , telling him that she felt better , when she began to cough . A moment later her head fell forward , and she was dead . The baby was given to me to bring up , and I loved him dearly . His father hardly looked at him . Hindley did not cry or pray after his wife’s death . He cursed God and man and gave himself up to wild living , drinking and gambling , until the servants left him . Only Joseph and I stayed : I would not leave Hareton , and Joseph stayed because he liked to scold the sinners in the house . The master’s bad ways had a bad effect on Heathcliff . Hindley treated him so badly that he would have made a saint into a devil . Truly it seemed as if the boy was possessed by something devilish at that time . He was pleased to see Hindley going down so fast . He became more sullen and savage every day , and only Catherine could make him smile . Nobody respectable ever visited the house now except Edgar Linton , who sometimes came to see Catherine .
