Little Hareton , who followed me everywhere , began to cry . Catherine caught him by the shoulders and shook him until he was pale . When Edgar tried to stop her , she slapped his face too . He stood up , white and shocked , and walked towards the door . “ I am going home , ” he said quietly . “ After what I have seen , I cannot come here any more . ” “ You must not go when you are angry , ” she said . “ I shall be miserable all night , and I won’t be miserable for you ! ” And she sank down on her knees by a chair and began to cry . I watched from the kitchen window as Edgar stood in the yard with his hand on his horse . He could no more leave than a cat can leave a mouse half killed , or a bird half eaten . I saw him turn back into the house and shut the door behind him . When I went in later to tell them that Hindley had come home drunk , I saw that the quarrel had brought them closer . They had stopped pretending to be friends and had confessed that they were in love . VI . “ I Am Heathcliff ” Hindley came home in a terrible state , swearing and looking for someone to hurt . I had just time to hide little Hareton in the kitchen cupboard . The boy was afraid of his father , who either kissed him like a wild beast or threatened to kill him . That evening Hindley found him and carried him upstairs . He held the child out over the rail of the stairs . While he was looking down , Hareton struggled free and fell . Before I could cry out , Heathcliff arrived below just in time . Without thinking , he caught the falling child , set him on his feet and looked up to see who had caused the accident . I can never forget his face at that moment . A miser who has sold a lucky ticket for five shillings , and learns the next day that it has won a fortune , could not look more disappointed . His face said clearly that he would have liked to let the boy fall and so destroy Hindley’s family , but it was too late now . Later that night I was sitting in the kitchen , singing to Hareton to make him sleep . Heathcliff had gone to lie on the bench in a dark corner , and I thought that he had gone out . Catherine came in quietly and knelt down beside me . “ Are you alone , Nelly ? ” she whispered . When I told her that Heathcliff was in the stable , she sighed . “ Oh , Nelly , I am very unhappy , ” she said . “ Will you keep a secret for me ? Today Edgar Linton asked me to marry him , and I have given him an answer . Before I tell you whether it was yes or no , tell me which it ought to have been . ” “ Really , Miss Cathy , how can I know ? ” I said . “ But after what you did this afternoon , it would be wise to refuse him . If he asked you after that , he must be either a stupid fool or a reckless one . ” “ If you talk like that , I shall tell you no more , ” she said . “ I accepted him , Nelly . Be quick , and say whether I was wrong ! ”
