Catherine would not come in , but stood near the gate in the rain , without her hat or shawl , crying and calling his name . When at last she came into the house , she was wet through . She sat by the fire all night in her wet clothes and would not go to bed . In the morning she was very ill with a fever , and the doctor said that she might die . For weeks we nursed her , and she was the worst patient that I have ever seen . When she was better , old Mrs Linton invited her to the Grange to finish her recovery . Catherine got well there , but the poor lady and her husband both caught the fever and died within a few days of each other . Heathcliff did not come back , and nobody knew where he had gone . Catherine grew more proud and wilful after her illness , and the doctor told us not to cross her . Three years later , when Mr Edgar had become the master of the Grange , she married him in Gimmerton church . She believed that she was the happiest woman in the world . I did not want to leave little Hareton , who was five years old and just beginning to learn his letters . But the young lady begged me to go with her , and Hindley ordered me to pack up . So I came here to the Grange , and when I said goodbye to Hareton , he was playing at the door . Since then he has become a stranger , and I have no doubt that he has forgotten all about Ellen Dean . VII . The Return For the first months of her marriage Mrs Linton seemed happy , and I was surprised to see how well she behaved . She was fond of Mr Edgar , and she was very kind to his sister Isabella , who was a pretty girl of eighteen . They were both so gentle with her that she had no reason to be cross . It was not the thorn that bent to the honeysuckle , but the honeysuckle that held the thorn . I believe that they really were happy , until something happened that ended it all . One mild evening in September I was coming from the garden with a heavy basket of apples . The moon was rising over the high wall of the court , and the house was in shadow . I had put my basket down on the steps to rest when I heard a voice behind me . “ Nelly , is that you ? ” It was a deep voice , with a strange accent , and yet something in it was familiar . I turned round , rather afraid , and saw a tall man in dark clothes standing near the door . His face was brown and his hair was black . “ What ! ” I cried . “ Is it you ? Have you come back ? ”
