She lay back on her pillow and began to tear it with her teeth . Then she pulled the feathers out and laid them in rows on the sheet , as if she were a child playing . “ That is a turkey’s , ” she said in a dreamy voice , “ and this is a wild duck’s , and this is a pigeon’s . And here is a lapwing’s feather . Once Heathcliff set a trap over a lapwing’s nest on the moor , and the parents did not dare to come back to it . In the winter we found the nest full of little skeletons . I made him promise never to shoot a lapwing after that , and he never did . ” She thought that she was a girl again at Wuthering Heights , in her old room with the oak panels . She did not know her own face in the mirror , and she begged me to open the window to let in the wind from the moor . I tried to stop her , but she got up and opened it herself . The cold night air rushed into the room . “ Look ! ” she said . “ That is my room at the Heights , with the candle in it , and the trees shaking in front of it . Joseph is sitting up late , I suppose , waiting for me to come home . It is a rough journey , and a sad heart to travel it , and we must pass by the church to go there . Heathcliff , if I dare you now , will you come ? I will not rest till you are with me . I never will ! ” At this moment Mr Edgar came in at last . When he saw her face , he was filled with horror and grief , and he took her in his arms . She did not know him at first , and then she spoke bitterly to him . I ran out at once to fetch the doctor , Mr Kenneth . That same night something else happened . On my way through the garden I found Miss Isabella’s little dog hanging by a handkerchief from a hook in the wall , and it was nearly dead . I set it free , but I was too busy and anxious to think about it . Mr Kenneth came back with me and said that my mistress had a brain fever . In the morning we found that Miss Isabella’s bed was empty . She had run away with Heathcliff in the night . IX . Isabella’s Letter When Mr Edgar heard that his sister had gone , he only said quietly that she had gone of her own free will . She had the right to go if she pleased , but from now on she was his sister only in name . He did not go after her , and for two months he spent all his days and nights at his wife’s bedside . He nursed her with great patience and tenderness , and slowly she began to recover . In the spring we learned that she was going to have a child , and my master’s heart was full of hope . About two months after Isabella left , I received a long letter from her . She had married Heathcliff , and they were living at Wuthering Heights . I have kept the letter , and I will tell you what she wrote , because it shows what kind of man he really was .
