I . Christmas Without Presents “ Christmas won’t be Christmas without any presents , ” said Jo , who was lying on the rug in front of the fire . “ It’s so dreadful to be poor ! ” sighed Meg , as she looked down at her old dress . “ I don’t think it’s fair for some girls to have lots of pretty things , and other girls nothing at all , ” added little Amy , with an unhappy sniff . “ We’ve got Father and Mother , and each other , ” said Beth from her corner . Her voice was quiet , but it made the others feel better for a moment . Then Jo said sadly , “ We haven’t got Father , and we shan’t have him for a long time . ” She did not say “ perhaps never ” , but each of the girls thought it . Their father was far away , where the war was being fought . He was too old to be a soldier , so he had gone as a chaplain to help the men in the army . There were four March sisters , and they lived with their mother in an old brown house in a small town in New England . Margaret , who was always called Meg , was the eldest . She was sixteen and very pretty , with large eyes and soft brown hair , and she was rather proud of her white hands . Jo was fifteen . She was tall and thin , with long legs that were always in her way , and she whistled like a boy . Her one beauty was her long thick hair , which she usually pushed into a net . Beth was thirteen , a shy , rosy girl who lived happily in a world of her own and loved music more than anything . Amy , the youngest , was twelve . She had blue eyes and yellow curls , and she thought of herself as a young lady . The family had once been rich . But Mr March had lost his money when he tried to help a friend , and now the older girls worked to help at home . Meg taught the four little children of a rich family , the Kings . Jo spent her days with old Aunt March , who was rich , cross and lame , and who needed someone to read to her . That evening the girls discussed the dollar that each of them had saved . At first each one wanted to buy something for herself . Jo wanted a new book , Beth wanted some music , and Amy wanted drawing pencils . Then Beth said that they ought to buy something for Mother instead , and everyone agreed . Meg would buy her a pair of gloves , Jo some slippers , Beth some handkerchiefs , and Amy a little bottle of perfume . At six o’clock their mother came home . She was not a fine - looking woman , but the girls thought that the grey cloak and the old bonnet covered the most splendid mother in the world . They called her Marmee . “ I’ve got a treat for you after supper , ” she said , with a happy face .
