X . The First Wedding Three years passed , and they brought few changes to the quiet family . The war was over , and Mr March was safely at home , busy with his books and with the small church that he looked after . John Brooke had gone to the war as a soldier for a year . He had been wounded and sent home , and now he was working hard as a bookkeeper . He had rented a little house , and Meg called it the Dovecote . She had spent the three years learning to cook , to sew and to keep house , and she had grown more womanly and more lovely . Jo had never gone back to Aunt March , because the old lady had taken a fancy to Amy and offered her drawing lessons with a good teacher if she came instead . Jo wrote stories for the newspapers , and she earned a little money with them . Beth had never fully got back her strength after the fever . She was still happy and busy at home , but she was quieter than before . Laurie had gone to college to please his grandfather , and he came home often with his friends . All the girls liked his friends , but Amy liked them most of all . Meg was married on a fine June day in the parlour of the old brown house . There was no grand party and no expensive dress . Meg made her own wedding dress , and her sisters braided her hair . She wore only the lilies of the valley which John liked best . “ I don’t want to look strange or fixed up today , ” she said . “ I don’t want a fashionable wedding , but only those about me whom I love , and to them I wish to look and be my familiar self . ” Mr March married the young couple himself . Aunt March came too , though she said that she had not intended to . She grumbled at everything , but she gave Meg a fine set of silver for her new home . After the wedding there was cake and fruit , but no wine . Mrs March wanted it that way , because she was worried about the young men . Laurie understood her meaning , and he promised Meg that he would never drink . Then the bride and bridegroom walked away together to their new home , with her family waving at the gate . Amy , meanwhile , was working seriously at her art . She drew and painted pictures , she tried modelling in clay , and she even burnt pictures into wood with a hot poker . In the summer she invited the girls of her drawing class to a lunch . She spent a lot of money on chicken salad and a lobster , and the family prepared everything . But on Monday it rained , and nobody came . On Tuesday only one young lady came . For a week afterwards the family had to eat the cold chicken and the salad , and nobody dared to mention lobster in Amy’s presence . Still , Amy did not complain . She said that she had tried to give the girls a pleasant time , and that she would be a lady , even if it cost her more than she had .
