Jo had found her own way . She saw an advertisement in a newspaper for a sensation story , and she decided to try for the prize of a hundred dollars . She wrote a wild tale full of despair , with an earthquake at the end , and she sent it off without telling anyone . Six weeks later a letter arrived , and a cheque for a hundred dollars fell into her lap . “ What will you do with such a fortune ? ” asked Amy . “ Send Beth and Mother to the seaside for a month or two , ” said Jo at once . They went , and Beth came home a little better , though not as rosy as everyone had hoped . After that Jo wrote more stories , and they paid the butcher’s bill and bought a new carpet . Then she finished a novel . A publisher said that he would print it if she cut it down by a third . Jo took everyone’s advice , and in the end she cut out many of the best parts . The book earned her three hundred dollars and plenty of praise and blame . Some critics said that it was a beautiful book , and others said that it was a bad and dangerous one . “ I wish I’d printed the whole or not at all , ” said poor Jo . But she laughed in the end , and she learned a great deal from it . Meg’s first year of marriage had its troubles too . One day she tried to make currant jelly , and it would not set . She was crying in the kitchen when John came home with a friend for dinner , which he had forgotten to tell her about . They had their first quarrel . Later she bought a silk dress that cost fifty dollars , which was far more than they could afford . John did not scold her , but she found out that he had cancelled the order for his own new winter coat , because they could not pay for both . Meg was so ashamed that she persuaded a rich friend to buy the silk from her , and with the money she ordered John’s coat herself . A year later Meg’s twins were born , a boy and a girl . They were named John Laurence and Margaret , but everyone called them Demi and Daisy . XI . Calls and Consequences “ Come , Jo , it’s time , ” said Amy one hot afternoon . “ For what ? ” “ You promised to make six calls with me today . It’s a debt we owe to society , and we must pay it . ” Jo hated paying calls . But she had promised , so she put on her best dress and her new gloves and went . On the way she asked Amy how she should behave . “ Be calm , cool and quiet , ” said Amy . “ That’s safe and ladylike , and you can easily do it for fifteen minutes . ” Amy was determined to behave perfectly , and she gave her sister careful instructions on the way . At the first house Jo was so calm and cool that she said nothing at all , and the ladies thought her proud and dull . At the second house she decided to be lively . She told funny stories about her own family , which made Amy blush with shame . At the third house she played with the young men , ran across the lawn and came back with her hat on the back of her head .
