“ Oh , my tongue , my dreadful tongue ! ” cried Jo . “ Why can’t I learn to keep it quiet ? ” She went away and cried a little alone . Then she came back and tried to be glad for her sister . Beth put her arms around her and whispered that she was selfish , but she was glad Jo was not going yet . That comforted Jo more than anything else . Amy sailed for Europe in the autumn . She stood on the deck and waved until the ship was out of sight , and when she could not see her family any more , she cried . Her letters were full of London , the shops and the famous paintings , then Paris , and then the Rhine . In London they met Fred and Frank Vaughn , the English friends from Camp Laurence , and Fred went with them for part of the journey . Amy wrote that he was handsome and rich , and that he admired her . Her letters were the great event of each week at home , and Jo read them aloud to the family by the fire . Amy described the grey London streets , the parks full of fine riders , and the evening when she sat in a theatre box like a real lady . In Paris she spent whole days at the Louvre , where she studied the famous pictures and felt very small . She wrote about the castles on the Rhine , the moonlight on the river and the students who sang under their hotel windows . Every letter ended with love to Beth , and with a promise that she would not grow too grand while she was away . “ I may marry for money , ” she wrote calmly in one letter , “ but only if I like the man too . I shan’t marry a man I don’t respect . ” XII . A Friend in New York At home Jo was worried about Beth . Her sister was quiet and sometimes sad , and Mrs March asked Jo to find out the reason . One evening Jo saw Beth watching Laurie as he passed under the window , and she saw tears in Beth’s eyes . Jo thought that she understood at last . Beth loved Laurie ! But Jo also saw that Laurie was growing fonder of herself every day , and that frightened her . She loved Laurie as a dear friend , but she did not want to marry him . So she decided to go away for a while . If she was not there , she thought , he might forget her and turn to Beth instead . Mrs March agreed . An old friend , Mrs Kirke , needed someone to teach her two little girls in New York and to help with the sewing . Jo would live in a room at the top of Mrs Kirke’s big boarding house . She would also have time to write . Before she left , she told Laurie about the plan , and he took it very quietly . But at the door he whispered , “ It won’t do a bit of good , Jo . My eye is on you , so mind what you do , or I’ll come and bring you home . ”
