Jo’s cheeks burned . She knew that he was right . That night she read her stories again in her room , and she saw them through his eyes . Then she put them all into the fire . “ I almost wish I hadn’t any conscience , it’s so inconvenient , ” she said with a sigh . But she felt better and cleaner afterwards . She wrote a moral story instead , and nobody would buy it . In June Jo went home . Mr Bhaer was miserable to see her go , although he tried to hide it . He came to the station to say goodbye , with a bunch of violets in his hand . “ Remember me , my friend , ” he said . She did not know that he hoped to see her again one day . XIII . Heartache That summer Laurie finished college with honours . The whole family attended the ceremony , and his grandfather was very proud of him . A day or two later Laurie walked home with Jo along the river . She knew what was coming , and she tried to stop him with jokes and quick talk . But this time he would not be stopped . “ I’ve loved you ever since I’ve known you , Jo , ” he said . “ I couldn’t help it , you’ve been so good to me . I’ve tried to show it , but you wouldn’t let me . Now I’m going to make you hear , and give me an answer , for I can’t go on so any longer . ” “ I wanted to save you this , ” said Jo . “ I thought you’d understand . ” “ I do , but girls are so queer you never know what they mean . They say no when they mean yes , and drive a man out of his wits just for the fun of it . ” “ I don’t . I never wanted to make you care for me so , and I went away to keep you from it if I could . ” Laurie stood still . “ I thought so , ” he said . “ It was like you , but it was no use . I only loved you all the more . I worked hard at college to please you , and I gave up billiards and everything else that you didn’t like . I waited and never complained , for I hoped you’d love me , though I’m not half good enough . ” “ Yes , you are . You’re a great deal too good for me , ” said Jo , and she began to cry . “ I’m so grateful to you , and so proud and fond of you . I don’t know why I can’t love you as you want me to . I’ve tried , but I can’t change the feeling , and it would be a lie to say I do when I don’t . ” “ Really , truly , Jo ? ” “ Really , truly , dear . ” He let go of her hands and turned away . Jo told him that they would be very unhappy together , because they both had strong tempers and strong wills . She said that he would find some lovely girl one day who would love him and make a fine mistress for his fine house . She said that she would never marry at all . “ I’m happy as I am , and I love my liberty too well to be in a hurry to give it up for any mortal man . ”
