Jo realised then that she had been completely wrong . Beth had not been sad because of Laurie . She had been sad because she knew that she was going to die , and that she would leave them all . “ I never made any plans about what I’d do when I grew up , ” Beth went on . “ I never thought of being married , as you all did . I couldn’t seem to imagine myself anything but stupid little Beth , trotting about at home , of no use anywhere but there . I never wanted to go away , and the hard part now is the leaving you all . I’m not afraid , but it seems as if I should be homesick for you even in heaven . ” Jo held her sister and said nothing . She prayed silently that Beth might stay . When they came home , nobody needed to be told . Their father and mother saw at once what the sea had not been able to do . XIV . Lazy Laurence On Christmas Day Laurie arrived in Nice . He had travelled all over Europe , but he had not been happy anywhere . He was walking on the Promenade des Anglais when a little carriage stopped , and a young lady in blue waved to him . It was Amy , and she looked so elegant and grown - up that at first he hardly knew her . “ Oh , Laurie , is it really you ? I thought you’d never come ! ” she cried . They spent many days together . Laurie took Amy to the Christmas ball , and she wore an old white silk dress which she had made pretty with flowers and a little imagination . She looked so graceful that Laurie was proud to be seen with her . He saw that she was not a little girl any more , and that she had become a charming young woman . Amy saw that he had changed too , but not for the better . He was idle and bored , and he seemed to care for nothing . When he asked her about her art , Amy answered that she had given it up . “ Rome took all the vanity out of me , ” she said . “ After seeing the wonders there , I felt too small , and I gave up my foolish hopes . Talent isn’t genius , and no amount of energy can make it so . I want to be great , or nothing . ” Laurie smiled , but he admired the spirit with which she turned to a new purpose without wasting time on regrets . She said that she would try to make herself useful and pleasant in other ways , and he thought that she would succeed . Fred Vaughn was also in Nice , and everyone expected Amy to marry him . He was rich , and she knew that it would be a good match . But when he went away for a few weeks on business , she did not seem sorry . One day Amy and Laurie were sitting in a quiet garden while she was drawing . Laurie was lying lazily on the grass . Suddenly Amy said , “ I despise you . ” “ Why ? ” asked Laurie , surprised .
