XV . The Valley of the Shadow When the spring came , everyone knew that Beth would not see another summer . The family made the best room in the house into a comfortable little world of its own for her . Her piano was there , her old dolls sat on the shelf , and the kittens played on the floor . Her friends sent her flowers and books . Beth was cheerful and busy at first . Her hands were never idle . She made little things for the children who passed under her window on their way to school , and she dropped them out to the boys and girls . But as the weeks went by , her needle became too heavy for her , and she gave it up completely . She suffered great pain , and her patience never failed . Jo never left her for an hour . She slept on a couch in the room , and she cared for Beth with all her strength and love . Beth talked with her about her fears and about the things that she wanted to say before she went . One night Beth found a little poem which Jo had written about her , and she read it . “ Have I really been all that to you , Jo ? ” she asked . “ I don’t feel as if I’d done much or been much . But I’m not afraid any more . I know that you will take my place and be everything to Father and Mother when I’m gone . They will turn to you , and you mustn’t fail them . If it’s hard to work alone , remember that I don’t forget you , and that you’ll be happier in doing that than writing splendid books or seeing all the world . ” “ I’ll try , Beth , ” said Jo . And then and there she gave up her old dreams of fame . She promised herself that she would be a new and better daughter . Beth died early one morning in spring . The night before , she had been very quiet . She laid her head on her mother’s arm and looked at her father , at Meg and at Jo , as if to thank them all . Then , as Beth had hoped , the end came gently . She went out like a tide that goes out easily . When the morning came , the birds sang in the tree outside her window , the snowdrops were in bloom , and the spring sun shone on the quiet face upon the pillow . Her father and mother took comfort in the thought that her long pain was over . The news reached Laurie in Vienna . He did not write to Amy that he was coming . He simply went to her . She was in Switzerland , at Vevay , with Aunt Carrol , and she was grieving for her sister far away from home . She was sitting in the garden by the lake when he came in , and she ran to him with her hands held out . “ Oh , Laurie , Laurie , I knew you’d come to me ! ” she cried .
