XVI . Under the Umbrella Jo was almost twenty - five now , and she believed that she would be an old maid . She did not mind as much as she had expected . “ Old maids are very comfortable when they get used to it , ” she said to herself . She would have her pen and her family , and that would be enough . One evening in autumn she was lying on the sofa , thinking about Laurie and about the past . Suddenly the door opened , and Laurie himself stood there . Amy was with him , and they were married . They had been married quietly in Paris and had come home as a surprise . Jo hugged them both and laughed and cried at the same time . Laurie had changed . He was a man now , steady and kind , and his love for Amy was plain to see . Jo’s old feelings had gone , and only a sister’s love was left . Later that same evening there was a knock at the door . Jo opened it and saw a tall , bearded gentleman on the doorstep . She cried out as if he were a ghost . “ Oh , Mr Bhaer , I am so glad to see you ! ” The Professor had come to the city on business , and he had come to visit her . The whole family welcomed him warmly . Mr March and the Professor were soon talking about books like old friends , and the babies climbed on his knees . For two weeks he came to the house almost every day . He and Jo went for long walks in the evening , and everyone smiled and pretended to see nothing . Then he stayed away for three whole days , and Jo began to fear that he had gone without saying goodbye . On the fourth day Jo went into town to do some shopping for her mother . She did not admit it to herself , but she walked through the part of the town where Mr Bhaer had his business . It began to rain , and she had no umbrella . She was standing in the wet street when an old umbrella appeared over her head . “ I feel to know the strong - minded lady who goes so bravely under many horse noses , ” said a familiar voice . It was the Professor . He offered to carry her parcels , and they walked on together under the umbrella . After a while he explained his news . “ My friends find for me a place in a college , where I teach as at home , and earn enough to make the way smooth for Franz and Emil . I go in the West , far away . ” “ So far away ! ” said Jo . She was quiet for a long time after that . When he asked her why she was crying , she said , “ Because you are going away . ”
